On March 28, the Classist and Combative Student Network (RECC) claims Combative
Student Day. On the same day, in 1968, 18-year-old high school student Edson Luíswas murdered by the forces of the military regime in Rio de Janeiro. Edsonparticipated in a student protest at the Calabouço restaurant, demandingimprovements and a decrease in the price of food. The Military Police entered therestaurant and machine-gunned everyone, leaving several wounded and others dead.Edson Luís had his body taken by his companions to be veiled in the LegislativeAssembly of Rio de Janeiro, and then by 50 thousand people to be buried. On thatdate, we remember and celebrate the brave and courageous struggle of the studentmovement during the military dictatorship and the need to always revive itscombative spirit in every school and university,Fifty-four years after the death of Edson Luís, Brazilian students continue theirfight for quality public education. During the pandemic, governments,secretariats and ministries took advantage of the moment to further scrap thecountry's education, harming the poor population and further increasing the abyssthat characterizes the education system in the capitalist and neoliberal model:inequality.In schools and universities, we are witnessing an increase in attacks oneducation. Militarization only increases with the direct or indirect presence ofthe forces of repression. Distance Learning has worsened the quality of educationand overburdened education workers, who were increasingly fewer and paid less.Research grants and scholarships continue to be underpaid or cut. Theinfrastructure of buildings and classrooms is terrible. The scenario is horribleand who loses out, once again, is the poor student, unable to study and,therefore, doomed to the worst jobs.This year, students must unite in struggle, rebuilding the student mobilizationforce and ensuring that demands are met.
