Our speech at the climate strike on March 25th, 2022: ---- An hour's flight with
the Eurofighter fighter plane generates as many tons of CO2 as an average personin Germany in one year. Military exercises constantly cause damage to theenvironment and climate. The Bundeswehr repeatedly causes fires during theirair-to-ground firing exercises, e.g. B. on Sardinia 2014 or the week-long moorfires in Emsland September 2019. Fires in which massive amounts of greenhousegases and fine dust are released. ---- The US military is the world's largestemitter of greenhouse gases. In 2017 alone, these even exceeded the emissions ofthe industrialized countries Denmark or Sweden. That is why the USA did not pushto change this, but rather to exclude them from the Kyoto Protocol.NATO, as the largest military alliance with constant training in wars and regularwar operations, will not change anything in the underground climate balance offighter jets and warships with a so-called "increase in energy efficiency" of thebarracks.For armaments lobbyists and industry, war is a bomb business and the greatestevil for people, animals and the climate, currently with Russia's war ofaggression against Ukraine or e.g. B. 1999 in the Kosovo war with the destructionof Yugoslavia by NATO with German participation.The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine not only causes suffering for thepeople, but also means another climate disaster.The Bundeswehr and NATO, in turn, imagine climate change as a security policychallenge that depends on the help of the military to combat it in order to keepthe situation under control. This can only mean preventing people whoselivelihoods are being destroyed from fleeing to the polluter countries. But alsoto protect capitalist structures and prevent people from taking over them so asnot to starve.The military and war have always been major contributors to the impending climatecatastrophe.Instead, however, the Bundeswehr is being upgraded, will receive 100 billioneuros and the military budget of the Federal Republic of Germany is said to be inthird place worldwide. Fracking gas from the USA, a gas extraction method that isextremely harmful to the environment, is being touted as an alternative toRussian gas supplies. That when looking for alternative gas suppliers btw. RobertHabeck's visit to Islamist Qatar to import gas from there shows that it is notabout human rights but about the interests of capitalist states.Fairy tales of price-gouging with gas supplies being withheld from GAZPROM arebeing invented to justify arms deliveries to Ukraine, which will certainly nothelp negotiations, but rather prolong the war and increase the number ofcasualties, which in reality are the result of speculation. The reasons for thehigh gas prices include increased demand in Asia, the particularly cold winter of2020/21 in Europe, which emptied gas storage facilities, and CO2 prices. It wasspeculated that gas prices would fall again, which is why the storage tanks werenot completely filled. In any case, gas deliveries are also explicitly exemptfrom the sanctions against Russia.In short: For us it can only be about DAMAGE LIMITATION. Warmongering and the cryfor more weapons cannot be the concern of the climate movement.A worn-out capitalism that has only made oligarchs rich and the civilianpopulation poor prevails in both Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian PresidentZelenskyy was elected mainly because he called for anti-corruption laws targetingUkrainian oligarchs who enrich themselves at public expense while the countrycannot even pay for gas supplies from Russia. This hasn't been an issue since hetook office. Anyone who believes that the highly indebted country joining the EUwould help the people of Ukraine should be reminded of the cruel austerity policytowards Greece.In the meantime, we workers and students are confronted with even higher livingcosts than before. If you are currently looking for a gas contract, you have topay a monthly payment of around €200 or more. Many simply cannot afford that. Thesame applies to the rising petrol prices.And anyone who looks at the politics of the Greens will also have to realize thatthey are not promoting effective climate protection, but are already passing thewhole thing on to the workers when, for example, there is talk of making foodmore expensive (Özdemir) or heating costs from Hartz4- Recipients can no longerbe accepted (Habeck).There is nothing leftist about workers being allowed to pay for it all. It isalso of no use to us to appeal for a waiver, whether for supposed solidarity orecological reasons. Not being cold is a human right and anyone who relies ontheir car to get to work cannot be told under capitalism that they should simplydo without it.It is possible that protests could form in Germany against the rising energyprices - comparable to the yellow vests in France. If so, one can assume thatthese protests will be politically diffuse. Unfortunately, the right-wing inGermany has been relatively successful in recent years building the framing thatclimate protection automatically means less money and thus a worsening of lifefor workers.The climate movement must position itself! We must not only react when theright-wing already dominates public discourse, as happened with the Corona protests.Let's not be played off against each other! Climate protection and social issuesbelong together.
