My name is Napo. I am 27 years old and I am from El Salvador. Today, I would like you to help me make this dream come true.
You see right now I'm in Tapachula, which is a small city in southern Mexico, very close to the Guatemalan border. I had to flee my country because I could no longer take the harassment I faced just for being gay.
In El Salvador, it is common that openly LGBT+ people are persecuted and even disappeared. And that's exactly what happened to me...
I was constantly followed by mysterious people who even tried to sexually abuse me. I filed a complaint with the police but all they did was make fun of me. I even moved five times, but the persecution never stopped. I couldn't take it anymore and decided to flee to Mexico.
But when I arrived, the immigration authorities did not let me speak up or explain that I had fled because of LGBTphobia. They took away my cell phone and left me in a place that looked like a prison. Once again, no one took me seriously for being gay. On the contrary, they only sought to deport me.
The only support I received was from Casa Frida, an LGBT+ shelter in Mexico City that helped me even before leaving El Salvador. They told me they could provide accommodation and help me with my asylum application if I got to Mexico City, but I still have more than 600 miles before getting there.
However, everything could be different if the Casa Frida team was here in Tapachula to help me. And that's exactly what they want to do!
