 Last November, in the town of Vecindario, Gran Canaria, one of those beginnings

of labor conflict took place that surprises you. Because when you think you've
seen it all, a new businessman or businesswoman arrives, smarter than the others,
and surpasses himself. ---- A new chambermaid started working at the Avenida de
Canarias Hotel, where there was already a Trade Union Section of the CNT. Four
days later, even without a contract, she was told that she was not going to work
there again, since she had been in CEAR (The Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid).
---- Faced with this unfair and discriminatory situation, the colleagues of the
Union Section protested to the company, which responded by firing one of the
members and sanctioning two others. The chambermaid who had been fired for being
a refugee received the support of our section and in an assembly they decided to
face together this conflict initiated by the company through Direct Action.

Just when you think you've seen it all, a new businessman or businesswoman
arrives, smarter than the rest, and outdoes herself.

After a meeting with the administrator, where she rejected the negotiation of
union demands and her reinstatement, the first distribution of leaflets began at
the doors of the Hotel, and throughout the Neighborhood. Social support was
resounding and signs of solidarity multiplied.

After these two weeks, the Hotel fled forward, sanctioning two of the colleagues
from the section who still work at the hotel with two months of employment and
salary, leaving them in a very delicate economic situation. The reason?
Distribute union information.

In response to this form of repression against trade union activity and for all
of the above, the first picket was called at the doors of the Hotel on December
18, where more than fifty people gathered for about two hours, demanding the
reinstatement, withdrawal sanctions and compliance with trade union demands.

The Hotel was forced to close its main door, the "improvised" resistance box
received many contributions to help the compañeras, and the Regional Television
attended, which interviewed our compañeras and sent information about the
conflict to the entire Canary Islands.
