We are witnessing a chaotic development of suburbs around Montreal and major
cities (Saguenay is not left out, by the way). The few rules in place, supposedto establish a minimum of planning in these sites, are diverted with theassistance and the complacency of the municipal elites. On the environmentallevel, we are told of "sustainable development" while economic growth alwaystakes precedence over the preservation of ecosystems. "Carbon neutrality"currently serves promoters. They destroy natural environments and then claim tocompensate for this damage by planting trees, that is to say by creating totallyartificial wooded areas. It is simply greenwashing. In Sorel-Tracy, the Coalition Eau Nature Air Purs (CENAP) is currently working todenounce the monopolization of several dozen hectares of natural habitats in thearea by real estate developers and financial firms. In this forest corridor thatconnects the Sorel islands to the heart of the region, there are swamps, wetplains, streams and a whole range of wildlife whose survival depends on thisentire ecosystem. "Sorel-Tracy is in the process of becoming the third crown ofMontreal", denounces a member of the CENAP in an interview with Le Devoir. Themultiple real estate development mega-projects on this territory are currentlygoing through the stages of their approval with the municipal authorities withoutdifficulty, even if wetlands are at stake. Some developers plan to preserve verysmall parts of these on land that they bought, calling the rest vulgar"undergrowth". They claim that the small natural enclaves, surrounded byconcrete, will be enough to preserve the green lung of the city. However, it isnot difficult to imagine the contamination of these by the runoff of water fromstreets and houses. Also, how will wildlife be able to survive in thesecompartmentalized environments where it will be perilous for animals to move fromone to another? Effects are even to be expected in terms of drinking water withgroundwater which could no longer meet demand while surface water points willgive way to asphalt. We abhor fatalism, but we have to realize that if we don't prevent the bulldozersof the capitalist system from passing, we are producing an unlivable world.Technocrats and business think of environmental conservation insofar as it meetstheir economic interests. The only real planning for the human use of theterritory and the satisfaction of the needs of the population must come frombelow - that is, be decided collectively by the "ordinary people", without title, simple inhabitants and residents of the territories, members of the First Peoplesand grassroots activists. In true assemblies of direct democracy, the pyramidwill be reversed: it will no longer be the richest and the political class intheir pay who will monopolize the most important decision-making, but the peoplewho will reflect and choose together for their present and their common future. The ecological crisis is inseparable from the social crisis with its constantlygrowing inequalities and its relations of domination. Barricades must be erectedto pave the way for a livable world.SergePosted 1 hour ago by Collectif Emma Goldmanhttp://ucl-saguenay.blogspot.com/2022/07/sorel-tracy-letalement-urbain-lassaut.html_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.caSPREAD THE INFORMATION
