The most religiousand reactionary states were quick to take advantage of this to ban abortion. IsFrance immune to such an appeal? ---- It has been 50 years since theconservatives and the far right in the United States have worked on theirpolitical agenda of the Moral Majority, 50 years since they have fought for ahardening of patriarchy. ---- The anti-choices never accepted the Roe vs. Waderuling. Demonstrations, sometimes violent, in front of clinics practicingabortion, chains inside the premises, death threats, assassinations of doctors orattacks, the anti-abortionists have never stopped trying to ban abortion by n'any means.Their latest strategy will have been the right one: following numerous attemptsby reactionary states such as Mississippi or Texas to circumvent Roe vs. Wade,the case was brought before the Supreme Court, which has had a Republicanmajority since Trump's presidency, allowing deliver the fatal blow.This attack, while it undoubtedly targets women in the first place, generallyconcerns all people likely to become pregnant and therefore to resort to abortion: they are women but also intersex people, non-binary people or trans men, thatwe too often forget.The demonstrations in the United States and around the world since the beginningof May (following the revelation of the conservative project by Publico) will nothave been enough. Rights acquired after a long struggle and relatively recent inthe history of this country.Let us also beware of naively thinking that such a step back could not happen oneday in France.If few are the figures of the right and the extreme right, most often Catholic,who publicly display total opposition to abortion like Christine Boutin orJean-Frédéric Poisson, they are less rare to mention a "personal" opposition.like François Fillon or François-Xavier Bellamy, or to criticize so-called "drifts".It should also be remembered that the FN (now RN) was radically anti-abortion fora long time: it demanded the repeal of the Veil law until the 2000s and thede-reimbursement of abortion until the presidential election of 2012.Although he now proclaims that he no longer wants to touch the Veil law, it isdifficult to believe in a sincere change with the choice as spokesperson for the2022 campaign of Laure Lavalette, a former member of La Manif pour tous whodemanded in 2014 the ban on the right to abortion in the long term (although itnow claims the opposite) just like Hervé de Lépinau, Christophe Bentz andCaroline Parmentier, now MPs, or with their systematic policy of reducing fundingfor family planning in the municipalities.If the RN kicks in at the moment by claiming that it is a "diversion" and byclaiming that the will of the NUPES, followed somewhat opportunistically byRenaissance, to register the right to abortion in the Constitution would be a"moral panic imported from the United States", nothing tells us that its 89deputies, undoubtedly accompanied by several LRs, will not go on the offensive inthe months or years to come.No need to immediately attack the Veil law to weaken and hinder the right toabortion : currently, this translates into cuts in funding, closures of medicalcenters practicing abortion, maintenance of the clause awareness and tolerance ofanti-abortion propaganda in some private Catholic schools ; this may also involvea reduction in the time limit for abortion, the establishment of restrictions tolimit access to abortion, delisting, etc.We absolutely must maintain and strengthen the balance of power so that the rightand the far right do not feel like they are growing wings following the SupremeCourt's decision.UCL would like to point out that the right to dispose of one's body, to freelychoose one's pregnancy, is a fundamental freedom. The same goes for all therights to dispose of one's body, from the transition from medication to therefusal of mutilation for intersex people.For American women, as for all women and gender minorities around the world, itis time for solidarity. Abortion is a fundamental right that must be defended andstrengthened.
