Since the beginning of the year, 300 laws have been passed in the United States
in an attempt to ban abortion. But it is not the only country where this right isthreatened ! the right to abortion, if it may seem acquired for some men andwomen, remains a fight that we will have to continue to lead everywhere in theworld. ---- In the United States, while the voluntary termination of pregnancy(abortion) has been decriminalized since 1973 at the federal level, the debate onthe question of abortion has been continuous for the past fifty years and remainsa key issue for the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court. ---- Anintersectional issue ---- The threat varies by state: several banned it in 2019and 2020, and voters in Louisiana even voted never to allow it. Last September,the Supreme Court endorsed in Texas the most restrictive law on abortion andmedical termination of pregnancy (IMG) , setting the time limit at six weeks, andsetting up a real reporting system.Since the beginning of the year, no less than 300 laws have been passed by theStates on the issue of abortion. Among the most striking, we can cite Alabama,where doctors who perform an abortion risk up to 99 years in prison. Theseattacks on access to abortion were led by conservative judges appointed by Trumpand George W. Bush in the federal appeals courts. Their objective is clear: it isa question of seizing the Supreme Court and of questioning the judgment of 1973,known as Roe v. Wade, guaranteeing all Americans the right to abortion.Indeed, on May 2, 2022, a draft judgment was published which could overturn theRoe v. Wade, thus giving each state the freedom to prohibit or authorizeabortion. The situation is particularly worrying since nearly twenty conservativestates have already promised to make it illegal and the United States Senatefailed, the following Wednesday, to pass a law guaranteeing access to abortionthroughout the country. .If the right to abortion is today so dangerously threatened in the United States,it is the culmination of a culture war of the American religious right which hasnever weakened in fifty years, hammering home the imperative of back to Roe v.Wade election after election.An international issueThe attacks on the right to abortion also target the 14th amendment, on which thelaws against racism, for homosexual marriage and for the freedom of all todispose of their bodies, therefore to abort, to transition... , behind theseattacks are also hidden heavy racist and LGBTIphobic attacks.This last stop is the tree that hides the forest. Indeed, the fight against theright to abortion works hand in hand with the attacks against LGBTI people andthe multiple racist attacks that are increasingly rampant, in the United Statesand in Europe. For example, we can cite the case of France, where thepresidential campaign allowed the media coverage and trivialization of racist,misogynistic ideologies and denying the identities and rights of LGBTI people.These ideologies are of the same order as those we have seen for years in theUnited States and that is why our feminism must be internationalist and anti-fascist.Moreover, it is a question of recalling that, if the recent events in the UnitedStates have given renewed visibility to the stakes of the fight for free and safeabortion, it is not the only country where this right is threatens. For example,remember that Irish men and women only had the right to have an abortion in 2018,that New Zealand only decriminalized it in 2020 and that Malta simply banned it .We should also remember that the Veil law of 1975 which legalized abortion isstill on hold - the inclusion of the right to abortion in the constitution,although requested by the left and extreme left, has never been done and thisright is still not protected by the European Union - and that the conscienceclause still allows doctors to refuse to perform an abortion.A matter of classAt the same time, as in the United States, we face so-called "pro-life"movements, often religious, which, in the media and in the streets, express theiranti-abortion ideology by playing on the guilt of the people concerned and theirrelatives. Even today, many of these associations set up fake toll-free numbersand fake websites to discourage people wishing to have an abortion.In addition to being a feminist issue, abortion rights are also a class issue.The electoral populism of far-right parties is a decoy, because, in the UnitedStates as in all countries where women, LGBTI, racialized people, do not haverights that protect them: these are first and foremost the proletarians and themost precarious who suffer.An example is with the ban on the right to abortion, which will affect the mostprecarious the hardest, in addition with the American health system which treatsyou according to your means.Remember: the criminalization of abortion does not make these medical actsdisappear, it just makes them more dangerous.Thus, the wealthiest will be able to change the state where to fly to go abroadfor an abortion, while the most precarious classes will have to fend forthemselves. Despite progress for the right to abortion in the world,the situation in the United States shows us that nothing is ever certain.Patriarchal oppressionThese obscurantist attacks target all people likely to resort to abortion: women,intersex people, non-binary people and trans men. They not only make it possibleto control their bodies and prevent them from disposing of them, but also confinethem to a procreative role. The right to abortion, if it may seem acquired forsome and some, remains a fight that we will have to continue to lead everywherein the world . It is a fundamental freedom in the same way as all the rights todispose of one's body.Only self-organization and the establishment of offensive struggles by all peoplesubjected to patriarchy will allow us to abolish this system of domination.
