Nestor Makhno, a Ukrainian peasant, was formed politically and ideologically
during the revolutions of 1905 and 1917, forging ties in Russian prisons withsuch militants as Pyotr Arshinov. ---- With his liberation and in the heat of theRevolution of 1917, he gave himself fully to revolutionary work, returning to hisland to organize the workers and peasants, founding the Professional Union ofAgricultural Workers and a local soviet of peasants as well as the first freecommune in the region. He also serves as president of the Professional Union ofMetalworkers and the Soviet of Peasants and Workers. ---- he heads one of themost important episodes in the history of the anarchist movement, the MakhnovistRevolution or the Makhnovitschina. A true social and revolutionary movement inwhich many of the libertarian theses were applied, radicalizing the workers andpeasants below, expropriating and collectivizing lands from lords and landowners,creating soviets and revolutionary committees along the way.The black army was the armed response of this movement to confront the tsaristwhites, the European imperialist armies and the Russian Bolsheviks, whoendangered the achievements and conquests of the Revolution made up entirely ofarmed workers and peasants.With the defeat at the hands of the red army, makhno must go into exile, alreadyin Paris together with other exiled militants such as Arshinov, Maksinov and Mettthey founded the "group of Russian anarchists abroad", with which they edit themagazine Dielo Truda, in it they embody the lessons of the Russian Revolution andthe anarchist defeat, urging the organization of anarchists in a solidorganizational platform, with a programmatic base, theoretical-practical unityand a determined and disciplined militancy in the social environment."anarchism cannot continue to be walled in the narrow parameters of a marginalthought, to which only a few small groups subscribe, operating in isolation. Itsnatural influence on the mentality of the human groups in struggle is somewhatapparent.
