Inflation in Serbia continues. Every month, the price jump of basic foodstuffs
manages to surprise us. Consumer prices in June this year, compared to June lastyear, increased by an average of about 12%. It is estimated that inflation inSerbia will reach 14% by the end of the year, if the war in Ukraine does not endby then, which does not seem certain at the moment. ---- Food has become moreexpensive by more than 16% in a year. The prices of meat, fruit and vegetables,fish, oil, fat, bread and cereals, milk, cheese and eggs have increased comparedto last year by 15%-20%. Fuel and lubricants for passenger vehicles increased inprice by about 23% over the course of a year, and the use and maintenance ofvehicles is more expensive by about 20%. Apartment rents are also increasingmonth by month. People without their own roof over their heads are increasinglyput in a position where, despite working and earning, homelessness lurks aroundthe corner. In line with inflation, we are also expecting an increase in theinterest rates of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), which will then be passed onto all of us through the banks.And while politicians and bosses convince us that they are the ones who sufferthe most in this whole situation, the fact is that the consequences of inflationfor workers in Serbia (and the whole world) are far greater. We, the workers, arethe ones who survive on our miserable wages. So, for us and our families, workliterally means life. We are forced to sell our time, knowledge and abilities onthe labor market for wages, because we are not the owners of the means ofproduction. However, those miserable salaries of ours meet less and less basichuman needs from month to month.However, inflation will not stop just because we and our families are burningunder our feet. The reason for this is that we are the ones that politicians andbosses look at in every crisis as cannon fodder or faceless pawns, while theypoison our minds with lies about how all of us, both bosses and workers, arebrothers and sisters because we live in the same country. In such crises, wesuffer the most, and they always profit. Such crises last until our word isheard, and until theirs is the last.We have to organize ourselves and fight to stop inflation, as well as to increasewages, in order to keep up with the current increase in prices. The crisis in thelives of male and female workers has been going on for decades.
