November Music and Steve Coleman Photo: John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation In its 25-year existence, the Amstel Quartet has utilized the saxophone in all its breadth. The quartet often collaborates with contemporary composers to create new repertoire for saxophone quartet. Now, a dream has come true: alto saxophonist Steve Coleman is composing a new work especially for them, wherein he will also share the stage with the quartet. Coleman became known as the bandleader of Five Elements and was a founder of the collective M-Base. Since 1985 he has developed his completely unique and innovative interpretation of jazz music with his endless search for new forms and ideas. In the performance during November Music you will hear interplay between contemporary music and Coleman's distinct transparent and abstract technique. The boundaries between composed and improvised music will be explored with this modular composition. In addition, the Amstel Quartet will also perform the work 'Les courants polyphoniques d'après Klee' by Hugues Dufourt, a pioneer in spectral music, also written for them. Even though several thousands of kilometers apart - they share a lot of common ground and have a close cultural relationship. Being their region’s musical hotpots they both are historical breeding ground for some of the world’ most legendary singers such as Edith Piaf or Fairuz. Love, loss and longing … universal themes that know no boundaries: Philippe Elan, Anass Habib and the Amstel Quartet will guide you through a passionate evening of famous French Chansons and Arabian Stories, with music by, amongst others, Oum Kalthoum, Fairuz, Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour. An evening not to be missed! Amstel Quartet in Ireland In July 2022, Amstel Quartet and Una Cintina traveled to Ireland for two performances of Maxim Shalygin’s new work for organ & saxophone quartet, ‘Songlessness’. The group had two concerts, in Galway and Dublin, and in both cases the performances were very enthusiastically received by the (sometimes-conservative) organ audiences. Each time Amstel performs ‘Songlessness’, it is a slightly different experience due to the differences in acoustics and, particularly, organ capabilities. However, like all of Shalygin’s music, it is always an intense trip! While in Ireland, we also had a chance to try lots of delicious Irish beers and enjoy an unusually long stretch of sun and warm Irish weather. It was wonderful to travel again as a group, which of course we haven’t been able to do as much the last few years due to Covid. New beginnings photo: Govert de Roos After 25 brilliant years as Amstel Quartet’s soprano saxophonist and premarius, Remco Jak has decided to leave the group in order to focus on his ICT career. Of course we were all disappointed, as Remco’s unique soprano sound was a core element of the Amstel quartet’s group concept, but also excited for him as he enters this new phase of his life. Taking his place, for the 2022-23 concert season, will be the fantastic saxophonist Vitaly Vatulya. Like all of the Amstel Quartet, Vitaly is a former student of Arno Bornkamp from the Conservatory of Amsterdam and has performed and recorded with several outstanding ensembles in NL and abroad. We are looking forward to this fresh start with Vitaly and wish Remco the best in his new pursuits. Thank you for all the years of music, Remco!
