Mahsa Amini was a young Kurdish woman aged 22. On September 13, on a family trip
to Tehran, she was arrested on the street and taken away by the morality policeof the Islamic Republic under the pretext of a lock of hair protruding from hercompulsory hijab. Two hours after her arrest, Mahsa was transferred unconsciousto a hospital in Tehran after having been beaten in the head, probably in thepolice car or during the "educational meeting" inflicted on women who do notstrictly respect the dress code imposed by the regime. She died on September 16after three days in a coma. Mahsa's death initially rocked her Kurdish hometown,Saghez. His funeral sparked protests that in the following days spread to moreand more cities in Iran and spread around the world. At the time of writing, revolts have taken place in more than 80 Iranian cities, including in very religious cities, such as Qom or Mashhad. The women take offtheir hijab and burn their headscarves in protest. The slogans target the wholeregime: "we don't want the Islamic Republic" or "Khaménéi (the supreme guide) isan assassin, his reign is illegitimate"...The various police forces savagely suppress these popular uprisings. On themorning of September 24, human rights organizations announced a death toll of atleast 49 people during the first days of the revolt. A figure that could be muchhigher because, as has been seen during previous revolts, the authorities falsifythe death certificates of those shot dead and put pressure on the families toensure their silence, threatening them not to return the bodies of their lovedones to them. Despite the arrest of dozens of students in recent days, a firstdemonstration took place at the University of Tehran on the same September 24,and there were even more of them than on the previous days. The repression is terrible: tear gas, tonfa shots and live ammunition. The policeemploy the worst tactics to surprise the demonstrators, including using publictransport and ambulances to get around. And the political police are more activethan ever: dozens of students have been arrested during rallies organized on thegrounds of universities all over the country. Arrests are also raining down onpolitical activists who are content to criticize the regime without even asking, like young people and the population, for its fall. Internet and especiallymobile Internet is as usual, either slowed down or cut off in areas where themovement is at its strongest. The regime does everything possible so that peoplecannot organize themselves, nor publish information or spread the photos andvideos of the atrocities committed on every street corner. But many documentsescape this censorship: images of demonstrators in blood or killed by bullets, clip which shows the police pursuing demonstrators until they are tracked down, breaking down the doors of the houses where the inhabitants have offered themrefuge. ...Despite this repression, the movement continues to swell. The motto "Woman, Life,Freedom", from Rojava and chanted in Kurdish during Mahsa's funeral, has becomethe rallying point for all protesters: first taken up in several Kurdish citiesin Iran, it is is broadcast throughout the country, translated into the variouslocal languages (Persian, Turkish, Arabic, etc.), then throughout the worldduring demonstrations of international support, where the Iranian revolt meetswith unprecedented solidarity. Thus, many political figures and many anonymous people have shown their supportfor women's movements in Iran. Various hacker collectives have taken down severalIranian government sites and media outlets. The hashtag #Mahsa_Amini, in Latin asin Persian, () has become the most used of all time on the social network Twitter.International solidarity is very important. For us anarchists, this massive uprising against the oppression of women andagainst the religious tyranny of a totalitarian state is a breath of fresh air.It is a revolution that we are calling for. The anarchist federation is obviouslyin solidarity with all the insurgents of Iran, and calls on every libertarian tosupport the struggle of women and the Iranian people.Long live solidarity with the struggle in Iran!
