will be presented on October 19 (Wednesday), at 9 pm, we will pay tribute to dearJuan Carlos Mechoso, historical militant of the Uruguayan Anarchist Federation(FAU ) and central referent of Latin American anarchism, who died on October 11,2022. Mechoso, although, according to him, is only part of this collectiveexperiment of Uruguayan workers embodied in the FAU, is a first-rate character inthe history of anarchism. Born in 1935 into a humble family, the son of a barberand worker and a maid, Juan had to abandon his studies after the 4th grade andstart working. Converted to anarchism very early, still at the age of 14, heparticipated in the foundation of the FAU in 1956. He was a community activist atthe Ateneu do Cerro and union leader for workers in the meat and graphicsindustry. He actively participated in the Obrero Estudantil Resistance (ROE), atrend group that united workers and students in mass struggles and mobilizations,and also in the Popular Revolutionary Organization 33 Orientales (OPR-33), thearmed wing of the FAU, which carried out actions such as kidnappings. politiciansand expropriations. Imprisoned for twelve years, between 1973 and 1985, he wasbrutally tortured by the forces of the military dictatorship and, with theopening, he was one of the rearticulators of the FAU, still in the 1980s. Fromthe 1990s, he directly contributed to the spread of Especifismo in the Brazil andelsewhere. It is, without a doubt, a multifunctional framework, with practicaland theoretical skills far above average; a "square", as some would say. Mechosowas the love with which he defended anarchism, popular struggles and, inparticular, his humility. At a time when people with 5% of their politicalhistory believe they are the owners of the truth and make arrogance their mostcharacteristic mark, he cultivated ethical assumptions that kept him away fromany arrogance and that allowed him to relate and discuss with the youngergenerations. new ones, conquering more people for their proposals.
