Last Saturday, October 29, members of the Emma Goldman Anarchist Collective held
a fourth launch of the Children's Anarchist Dictionary since it was publishedthis summer. It is therefore at the invitation of the comrades of the Black Flagof Sherbrooke that the collective went to the Noir thistle which hosts both atattoo parlour, an anarchist library, a room and a creative workshop. About 25people responded to the invitation. ---- As you can probably guess, this is not abook that the adult simply reads to the child, like a collection of stories. Thisbook is intended above all to be a tool to stimulate curiosity and criticalthinking. The launches of the Anarchist Dictionary for Children often turn out tobe lively and creative moments. This time, the people present were mostly adultsand the majority of children were under 3 years old. So we had a criticaldiscussion about education and one person suggested experimenting with a new wayof using the dictionary. During the event, a participant asked those present howthey would explain to a child words such as mutual aid or even anarchism beforemaking the comparison with the definition proposed in the Anarchist Dictionaryfor Children. The contrast can be seen even more, and can raise interestingquestions, if we compare the definitions commonly given to concepts such as banksor hunger to the definitions given in our dictionary. It is then interesting tolook with the child on what can explain such a gap in the representations. Thereare therefore a multitude of ways to use it, the important thing remains theexperimental trial and error and the discussion between the adult and the child.Already after four launches, we can say that the book exceeds our expectations.We are happy with the interest shown in this one everywhere within theFrancophonie even if it circulates for the moment mainly in Quebec. Thanks tovoluntary contributions, we were able to donate free copies to more than thirtygroups of all kinds who agreed to make it available to users in their libraries:community organizations for children, Aboriginal organizations , organizationssupporting LGBTQ+ communities, free learning centers, women's centers andfeminist groups, citizens' committees, militant feminist, queer or anarchistlibraries, a self-managed participatory grocery store and even a squat formigrants in the neighborhood rebel from Exarcheia. Our approach is notcommercial; we produced, funded and distributed this book independently. It maynot be the easiest way, but it is the most satisfying for us. It allows us toengage in interesting discussions on the different regional militant realities,on childhood, parenthood and education, to renew contact with comrades and toknow new ones, to discover other inspiring self-help initiatives and otherprojects like this comic on the housing crisis that someone came to present to us.Anarchist library accessible to Noir thistleA fifth launch is scheduled for November 12 in Saint-Fulgence and we are lookingto possibly organize one or more launches in Gaspésie and Trois-Pistoles, tofollow.
