voice. Tens of thousands of people in Ukraine are signing petitions calling for
the borders to be opened, and tens of thousands more are gathering at channels
reporting on the raids. How many others still share similar views cannot be
estimated. The authorities ignore their demands and thus deprive them of the most
basic right to self-determination, the right to decide their own life and death.
However, this dilemma does not concern the bourgeoisie, as the wealthy population
of Ukraine can leave the country by paying a ransom at the border. The testimony
of these people has no place in the media, dominated by nationalist and
militaristic narratives. It's like a Hollywood movie where Zelensky is the
captain of Ukraine, a hero who personally comes into conflict with the
supervillain Putin, while the Russians and Ukrainians are a single mass of
nameless pawns.

And yet each of these people, held against their will by the state, is a hostage
of a repressive regime, a human being of flesh and blood like you or us. Putin is
undoubtedly a big criminal, but there are no superheroes in this story. Under the
guise of giving victims a voice, only the pro-state narrative is accepted. The
organization of street actions is criminalized and signed petitions, currently
the only legal way to communicate public sentiment towards power, are ignored. As
long as Ukrainian authorities hold people against their will, they will be
responsible for the dead and maimed.

For us, war is terrible not because governments and borders change, but because
people die. The Ukrainian authorities cough it up. Another mass grave does not
bother them more than a lost military asset or a strategic position."
