Confronting the racist right, resisting State power: An interview with Shane Burley, a close look at Black resistance, and an alternative to capitalist shopping

Once again, the racist right is exploiting a global crisis – pandemic, war, economic crisis – to mobilize the masses around policies and politicians that will only solidify the power of capitalism and the State. Our livestream series, Finding Agency, kicked off recently with an interview with longtime anti-racist activist Daryle Lamont Jenkins (look for more in this series soon!). The Institute for Anarchist Studies’ interview with Shane Burley, editor of the new No Pasarán! Antifascist Dispatches from a World in Crisis, which pulls together wide-ranging writings on antifascism, provides a wide-angle view of the work of activists like Daryle. In “To be ungovernable: on the history and power of Black anarchism,” Lisa Insana finds the essence of anarchism in the centuries-long struggle of people of color against racism and hegemony.

Anarchism doesn’t just oppose certain people or groups taking power; it questions the very concept of power as it operates today. Mark Engler and Paul Engler, in “What’s the problem with taking state power?” take a close look at this crucial issue: Should we maintain independence and function as a critical force outside of mainstream politics, or attempt to take hold of the levers of institutional power in order to create change? And Ella Fassler visits an experimental hub in Ridgewood, Queens, New York, to see how free stores can offer an alternative to the exploitative capitalist economy.

Agency is committed to providing the anarchist perspective on current crises, amplifying anarchist voices, and supplying resources for anarchists who want to make their work visible over the static from both the mainstream media and the right-wing noise machine. Please get in touch if you have ideas or skills you would like to contribute.

FINDING AGENCY is a new livestream series that features conversations between activists, organizers, scholars, journalists, and writers to illuminate and amplify anarchist and anti-authoritarian perspectives on current events, as well as grassroots organizing and political education, strategy, and tactics. Brought to you by the team behind Agency, an anarchist PR project.

We seek to engage the public through dialogues with anarchists, organizers, revolutionaries, and visionaries from a political framework that is anti-statist, anti-capitalist, and anti-oppressive.

Finding Agency livestream events provide commentary on a wide range of new and current events and political analysis that is missing from the mainstream media in order to reframe misrepresented stories and amplify underrepresented voices and efforts.

Paul Messersmith-Glavin: Interview with Shane Burley, Editor of No Pasarán!: Antifascist Dispatches from a World in Crisis

Paul Messersmith-Glavin: Talk about what was going on in the world four or five years ago and what motivated you to put this collection together.

Shane Burley: I think I first came up with the idea in 2018 when I was at a bar with Kim Kelly and Spencer Sunshine. It seemed like the time to start something like this, and I knew it would be a multi-year endeavor. There was a lot of interest in the idea of antifascism because people were joining antifascist groups, creating new ones, building these really mass actions, and, more importantly, trying to figure out what was next. Read More>>

Lisa Insana: To be ungovernable: on the history and power of Black anarchism

For centuries, Black people have been fighting the systems that have always excluded them. It’s within these collective histories and current struggles that we see the rhythms of anarchism. Read more>>

Mark Engler & Paul Engler: What’s the Problem With Taking State Power?

As social movements move beyond the default anarchist sensibility that prevailed through Occupy, they must reckon with hard questions about bureaucracy and cooptation. In 2002, in the midst of a wave of global resistance to corporate globalization that would produce major protests at trade meetings from Seattle to Genoa to Hong Kong, a book appeared that captured much of the spirit of the period’s activism. Read more>>

Ella Fassler: Free Stores Offer an Alternative to the Exploitative Capitalist Economy

We all love a good bargain, and are sometimes willing to go to great lengths to secure one. But for a few hours at Woodbine, an experimental hub in Ridgewood, Queens, New York, thrifting was entirely free and there wasn’t a catch. Perhaps unsurprisingly, a flood of people showed up to the space 30 minutes before its “Free Store” event was supposed to begin. Read more>>
