Dear friends –
Since the World Cup began on Sunday, we're already seeing reports of harassment and discrimination of LGBT+ folks, and even officials confiscating rainbow flags from fans.
These reports are laying bare FIFA's blatant homophobia and hypocrisy. While they say they're committed to love and equality, (they even tweeted their support to LGBT+ folks during Pride Month 🏳️🌈!), this year's tournament is being hosted in one of the world's most dangerous countries for LGBT+ people.
But it didn't have to be this way if FIFA had followed its very own standards.
FIFA has strict criteria when it comes to selecting World Cup host nations – in theory. In fact, as a signatory to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, FIFA is committed "to create a discrimination-free environment and prohibit discrimination of any kind," including on the basis of sexual orientation and gender expression.
FIFA has failed to live up to those values. And they're putting LGBT+ lives at risk.
It's time FIFA stands up and takes responsibility by finally embodying the values it claims to hold. Can we count on you to sign All Out's petition urging FIFA to finally choose love and equality when selecting future World Cup host countries?
