army entered the city of Kherson, which had been occupied by Russia almost since
the beginning of the war. Russian troops from Kherson retreated to the left bank
of the Dnieper: before that, they destroyed the entire power supply system of the
300,000-strong city and blew up all the bridges behind them. This, of course, is
a serious loss for Putin's army in a military sense and for Putin's political
system in a symbolic sense. The only regional center that Russia was able to
occupy during the war was surrendered.

This symbolic loss is terrible for the Putin system, including the fact that it
is a real brain rupture for the Kremlin propagandists. The Internet is already
filled with jokes about two chairs and two administrative or criminal articles.
And indeed, if you do not support the surrender of Kherson to Ukraine, then you
discredit the Russian army, and this is Part 1 of Article 20.3.3 of the Code of
Administrative Offenses. And if you don't support it again, then already part 1
of article 280.3 of the Criminal Code, up to three years in prison. On the other
hand, support for the surrender of Kherson to Ukraine is, it seems, "public calls
for the implementation of actions aimed at violating the territorial integrity of
the Russian Federation" (Part 1 of Article 280.1 of the Criminal Code). After
all, the Kherson region was solemnly declared a part of Russia a little over a
month ago. The logic of authoritarian regimes does not allow for losses, does not
know how to "process" them, so to speak. Therefore, when confronted with reality,
they break a little. Or they break badly.

Well, the more the Kremlin regime breaks under the pressure of reality, the
better. We will not pity him. Of course, it's good that Putin's invaders lost
Kherson. But this brings us to other interesting things to think about.

Everyone has probably seen videos where local residents are happy to meet the
advanced detachments of the Armed Forces of Ukraine entering the city: tears,
songs, night fires, "Glory to Ukraine", that's all. And here, let's say, a
"classical" anarchist has some cognitive dissonance: the fact that the empire has
retreated is wonderful. But is it good to meet the army of the state of Ukraine
with flowers, with all the sympathy for its defense from the Russian Federation?
It seems like in the Manifesto of "Autonomous Action" there is an item
"Anti-militarism":

"Against the state army as a system of violence, a tool for the domination of the
ruling castes and an instrument for integrating young people into the
patriarchal, authoritarian and hierarchical structures of the domination system."

Isn't the Armed Forces of Ukraine a state army? Of course, the state. Can we
understand the people of Kherson? Of course we can. It is difficult to condemn
them and it is difficult to imagine that at the meeting of the Armed Forces of
Ukraine they would make any reservations in the spirit of "we welcome you as
opponents of the authoritarian Putin regime, but we condemn your uniform of the
state army." It would be stupid.

All this once again reminds us that the world is not black and white and not a
single ideologeme describes it in its entirety. This year marks the 180th
anniversary of one of the main theorists of anarchism, Peter Kropotkin. "Mutual
Aid as a Factor of Evolution", "Bread and Freedom", other famous works. But after
the outbreak of the First World War, he took a position for which almost all
anarchists and leftists of that time condemned him: the so-called "defencism."
While everyone else around the world called on the soldiers of all countries to
lay down their arms and not participate in the imperialist slaughter, Kropotkin
declared something along the lines of "We have one Motherland and for it we must
stand and lie down, if necessary, all of us, both left and right" (by
"Motherland" I meant Russia, of course) . Finally, as we know,

Paradoxically, if we imagine that today Kropotkin is a Ukrainian, then Ukrainian
anarchists act directly according to his precepts: join the ranks of the Armed
Forces of Ukraine or territorial defense, collect donations, help in every
possible way to protect against Russia. But they certainly do not call for
desertion, surrender, or for raising officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on
bayonets. But the anarchists from Russia and Belarus, on the contrary, take, in
the terminology of the early 20th century, a "defeatist" position: they want the
Russian Federation to suffer a military defeat, they urge not to go to the
military enlistment offices, and if they are mobilized, then as soon as possible
to desert or surrender to captivity.

To understand why this is so, you need to understand the difference between the
First World War and the Russian-Ukrainian war of 2022. In the first case, a
really purely imperialistic division of territories took place, in most cases
there was no talk of any "protection from attack", and the opposing sides cost
each other in terms of repressiveness and obscurantism. In the second case, there
is direct aggression of the archaic under-empire (Russia) against the much weaker
bourgeois under-democracy (Ukraine), and even with the almost clearly declared
goal of destroying the Ukrainian language and culture. Under these conditions,
repulsing the Russian invasion is really the best thing that any Ukrainian
progressive forces (and Russian ones, too, if they want to hasten the collapse of
the Putin regime) can do.

That is why in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine we see people with
"anarchies" on bulletproof vests, with black and green flags and generally
drowning for direct democracy and social justice. Here, for example, on the intro
of this episode of "Trends" is a photograph of anarchists from the Ukrainian
movement "Environmental Platform" . They are in Kherson: with machine guns and in
military uniform. And now, in our opinion, this is correct. People are working to
prevent the expansion of the Kremlin empire and to bring Ukraine as close as
possible to decentralization and grassroots self-government. But in the ranks of
the Russian army, we instead observe only some kind of muddy types with St.
George ribbons, swastikas and "dead heads".

Recall that the Manifesto of "Autonomous Action" continues with these words:

"For the possibility of general arming of the working people and the militia type
of organization of defense without drill, soldiery, humiliation of human dignity
and the prison regime."

It seems that in many aspects (not all, of course), the Ukrainian army is now
much closer to this ideal than the Russian one. In general, treat everything
critically and creatively, even Kropotkin. "Question everything", "Question
everything" as sung by Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys.

2. Fascism is on the rise in Russia
The army of the Russian Federation is politically quite consistent with the state
apparatus of the Russian Federation. As part of the fight against global
Satanism, Russia wants to ban computer games with LGBT characters and introduce
criminal charges for ... well, in fact, simply because you are gay, lesbian,
transgender, or simply do not fully correspond to Domostroy values. All this to
the accompaniment of Putin's decree on the next planting of "the values of a
strong family and marriage, patriotism and service to the Fatherland" and all
that. "Serving the Fatherland", of course, is to die in the trenches somewhere
near Bakhmut, defending the picture of the world of the elderly KGB officers from
the Security Council of the Russian Federation.

Actually, it's pretty funny. Apparently, it seems to the deputies in the State
Duma and Putin himself that queer persons will fight badly for their
under-empire, and therefore all this debauchery must be urgently banned. It's
funny that this happens exactly at the time of the shameful retreat from Kherson
under pressure from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in which open LGBT people also
serve . Apparently, gays and lesbians do not interfere with Ukraine's victory.

3. Protests by relatives of the mobilized
Meanwhile, freshly mobilized Russians are already being thrown to the front line,
where, of course, they simply die in the hundreds, as happened in the Svatovsky
district of the Luhansk region . As expected, the Kremlin is using the mobilized
as cannon fodder to close the gaps in the defense. Now their relatives are
starting to protest and demand that "the guys be returned home."

For example, the wives of mobilized Voronezh residents came to the border town of
Valuiki in the Belgorod Region and demanded "to bring their husbands back . " As
a result, it seems like one company was returned, but the other was not, and now
the relatives went to the Luhansk region to look for their people there.

Approximately the same is done by the wives of those mobilized from Vologda. In
the video message, they say, they say, " The guys were trapped in a fiery trap,
they were killed ... Please return our husbands, sons from this hell! ".

Of course, I really want to gloat here and ask, "What were you thinking about
when Russia started this war at all? Why did you start recording protest videos
only when your husbands were being killed, and when Russian bombs fell on
Ukrainian cities, didn't you care? ".

These are legitimate questions. But it is unlikely that gloating will help to get
closer to the goal - to a freer life on the territory of the so-called Russian
Federation. Unfortunately, the majority of its population is apolitical and it is
very difficult for people to jump over the abyss from this apoliticalness to a
deep libertarian analysis. Most often, eyes are opened precisely after suffering
and injustice come personally to your house. Anarchists should not reject these
protests, they should be supported and developed, trying to explain to people
why, after all, their husbands or brothers are now dying in the frozen trenches
in the Donbass without water and food. Explain that "the enemy is not Ukrainians
or gays, the enemy is in the Kremlin."

4. "Woman, life, freedom": protests in Iran
We have already said in the trends that Russia is now in international isolation
and therefore is forced to buy weapons for its war from other archaic
dictatorships - in particular, from the Islamic Republic of Iran. But a real
uprising is now raging in Iran itself after the vice police in Tehran killed a
22-year-old woman because she wore the hijab incorrectly.

Clashes with the police have been going on for almost two months in six of Iran's
31 provinces. And these are protests both against the medieval Islamist system of
government and against patriarchy in general. Women actively participate in
protests and organize them. Read on our website an article by the Crimethinc team
translated by the Belarusian group "Pramen" . It describes in detail what is
happening in Iran now and why the ayatollah regime does not have long to live: it
will soon be swept away by a new generation of Iranian women and Iranians.

And for the war in Ukraine, this will mean the cessation of deliveries to Russia
of drones, missiles and other instruments of terror against Ukrainian cities. So
the events in Iran are of great importance to all of us, we are closely following
the protests and we wish them a speedy victory.

"Woman, life, freedom"!

5. Repression
On November 8, the house of anti-fascist Mikhail Erokhin was searched in
Yekaterinburg. And on November 9, the Kirovsky District Court arrested him for
seven days for allegedly intending to distribute the 32nd issue of our Avtonom
magazine. This number was recognized in Russia as "extremist" back in 2013 ,
along with numbers 29 and 33. Actually, since then we have not distributed these
issues and do not recommend anyone to store and distribute these issues and
articles from them - as practice shows, this may be enough to leave for at least
a few days in an isolation ward. However, since our magazine is not registered as
a media outlet, being labeled "extremist" does not affect other issues that can
still be distributed in Russia.

But administrative 7 days is still relatively nonsense. There are fears that the
pressure on Mikhail may be related to the torture "Tyumen case", since Mikhail
was asked about his defendants . It cannot be ruled out that this pressure will
continue after his release for a day. In connection with the "Tyumen case",
prosecutions against other anti-fascists, anarchists and left-wing activists of
the Urals are also possible . Be careful!

in paying for lawyers. Support Deniz, Kirill, Yuri, Danil, Nikita and Roman!

In addition, the Anarchist Black Cross - Moscow has launched a special collection
to support anti-war prisoners in Russia. This is a very important matter, and we
call on you to help in any way you can. Here is what ABC-Moscow representatives say:

"Eight months after the start of the war, we spent almost all the donations, but
people who opposed the war continue to be in prison, and there are more and more
of them month by month. We are starting a new fundraising campaign. First of all,
we help those accused of direct actions, such as arson of military registration
and enlistment offices, since most human rights organizations do not support such
people."

And finally, continuing the theme of birthdays. Pyotr Kropotkin would have turned
180 years old, and Belarusian anarchist Dmitry Rezanovich would have turned 33 on
November 12. Like Kropotkin, Dmitry celebrates his birthday behind bars.
Lukashenka's "justice" sentenced him to 19 years in prison for direct action,
from which not a single person was harmed , during the Belarusian uprising
against the dictatorship of 2020.
