One Sunday morning, during our Sunday press table, activists of the Palestinian
cause came to ask us to sign yet another petition. We have, of course, declinedthis proposal, explaining that we do not support any national liberation struggleand any nationalism of any kind. To which these activists told us that it was aproblematic position and left upset. In our newspaper, we have never been shyabout attacking all forms of nationalism, whether right or left, regional or atthe end of the world. Karl Marx said: "the proletarians have no fatherland",which did not prevent all kinds of Marxist-Leninist obedience from supportingvarious national liberation struggles in the name of anti-colonialism toultimately support new regimes , certainly rid of the colonists, but just asexploiters and murderers as the colonizer. One cannot be internationalist oranationalist, advocate the class struggle and, in its name, support more or lessauthoritarian nationalist regimes, on the pretext that they come from the ThirdWorld and are socializing.Take the example of the Palestinian cause, and especially of the different peoplewho support it. It attracts many anti-Semites disguised as anti-Zionists (even onthe left, mostly them!), who make Israel the source of all the evils of the earthand compare its policies to those of the Nazi regime. Admittedly, Israel is notnecessarily a model of diplomacy and cordial understanding, but neither more norless than France, England, the United States or Sweden... And affirming thismakes us automatically switch to the Zionist camp, which we do not supporteither. But it is all the same revealing of what nationalism is and its specificbreed that claims to fight against colonialism. If you are not with us, you areagainst us!A state, a nation, in order to survive, necessarily resorts to a whole bunch ofcrap. Its methods change according to the political regime (dictatorial ordemocratic), its economic power: this is the famous "reason of state".The denunciation of the imperialism of a particular country does not interest us,because for any nation in the world, even the most humble, if the historicalopportunity arises, it will turn into imperialist nations. Any nation potentially is.What must be understood is that capitalism has found in the nation a suitableframework for its development. Any "proletarian" and at the same time nationalistdiscourse is an anomaly. Nationalism necessarily calls for class collaborationand the establishment or re-establishment of a social hierarchy. And so thattheir project can be carried out, they will use as always the workers, thepeasants, the small employees, like cannon fodder. The bourgeoisie will alwaysown the factories, the businesses, with a government at their heels, composedstrictly of bourgeois like them.It is no secret that nationalism of any kind often leads to racism, exclusion anddiscrimination. Current anti-racists, often very zealous when it comes todenouncing local Franco-European fachos, almost promote the ideology of the"nation of Islam", in the name of a certain radical and supposedly decolonialanti-racism.Warmongers frequently do this in the name of a certain idea of "community ofdestiny", or other such nonsense. At the end of World War I, the Archduke ofAustria was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. This event subsequentlycaused, due to the alliance games throughout Europe, the great butchery of 14-18.One of the arguments of France and England was the defense of the weak againstthe strong, in this case the support of Serbia against the Austro-HungarianEmpire and Germany. The bourgeoisie, using intense propaganda that systematicallyportrayed the Germans as bloodthirsty barbarians, succeeded in rallying thesocial democrats and even some anarchists to its sacred union against itsGermanic neighbor. Each country felt in its right, and it is always in the name of a noble noblecause which in reality is an authentic imperialism that they sent their people tothe slaughterhouse. The financial stakes were high, and some took advantage of itto amass colossal fortunes during the 1re world war. We must not forget that warsare also occasions for looting and plunder, and industry is running at full speedto supply armies and support the war effort. The current war in Ukraine, like somany before, is being played out at the expense of the people, they are clashingbetween capitalist powers with divergent interests. It is obvious that Russiatook a dim view of the expansion of NATO at the gates of its borders. Ukraine isabove all a particularly important geo-strategic territory. It is thereforelogical that many people covet this geographical area. Claiming a highconcentration of neo-Nazi mercenaries (Nazis, in fact), Russia then invadedUkraine (always for noble ideas...). What made some of our local anti-fascistsfantasize about being divided between pro-Putin and pro-Zelensky is reallylamentable. On TV, in the newspapers, they all profess their rejection of war, but at thesame time wish for victory for Ukraine. To do this, they are asking for moreweapons to be delivered to them, or even for French soldiers to be sent there.Presenting the simple Russian soldier as an assassin and a bloodthirsty barbarian(well, well...).The question is why has Russia embarked on an operation, the consequences ofwhich will be catastrophic, including for her? And above all, what is its interest??Sometimes, for a state, launching a war may seem like the most pragmaticsolution. Putin is certainly a nationalist, but he is not crazy and whateverpeople say, he does not govern alone. The logic of the ruling classes, theirdiverse and varied interests, generally have nothing in common with those of theproletarians. The idea of belonging to a nation, of a community of destiny, within the population is very practical, to hide its differences and bring theexploited to fight to defend the interests of their own exploiters. The invasion of Ukraine was probably planned years in advance, the staffs alwayshave plans for the most varied situations. It is not certain that this militaryoperation was really chosen, but rather brandished as a threat in the concert ofnations. Or at least initially. At a time when the war in Ukraine is raging and nationalisms are exacerbated, inthe West we are told to take sides with the Ukrainian regime. In reality, he ishardly better at the level of filth and arbitrariness vis-à-vis the Ukrainian ofthe street, than his powerful neighbor towards the average Russian. In Russia, itis not advisable to disapprove of this war in any way, under penalty ofimprisonment. Most of the Russian servicemen operating in Ukraine come from thepoorest regions of Russia, where unemployment rates are particularly high. It'san old recipe that still works, the proletarians serve as cannon fodder for thepowerful, industrialists and traders of any country whatsoever. On both sides of the border, military service is compulsory and women attackrecruiting offices. Many Russian and Ukrainian soldiers are deserting, supportingthem.http://cntaittoulouse.lautre.net/spip.php?article1279_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
