Jeanne, the narrator, was born and grew up in a poor family in a Swiss village.
Her mother is gentle, but resigned to the harshness of her life, and puts herenergy into trying to keep up appearances. Her big sister is beautiful, and "lessclever"; she does not know how to feel when the storm is coming. And this onecomes through the father, a violent man. ---- His brutal anger and the blows hestrikes at his mother and sister push Jeanne, very young, to observe him as oneobserves a dangerous animal. She behaves as she feels necessary to preserveherself. Until this day - she is eight years old - when she anticipates badly,and when he beats her. Wounded, she hears her mother call the family doctor andsavors her triumph; this doctor whom she admires, whom she knows to be culturedand refined, will see that something unfair is at stake in this family. Andintervene.But cowardice and the law of silence prevail.Jeanne will therefore try to build herself with this immense and so legitimateanger, rekindled many times, of the victim whom we have refused to help.
