Far from union strongholds and the headlines of the news channels, permanent and
seasonal workers from the UCPA associative group have fought this year to obtainsalary increases. An exemplary movement, in a sector where precariousness is thenorm. ---- The National Union of Outdoor Sports Centers (UCPA), where nearly13,000 people work internationally, including 2,276 registered in the staffelections in France, is one of the few structures in the professional sector ofsport where trade unions are established. But without a real balance of power,driven by a majority of workers, trade unions have little room for manoeuvre.The CGT asked in 2021 for a general increase to deal with inflation, but withoutsuccess. In June of this year, the group's managing director tried to pull therug out from under the discontent by proposing increases of up to 2%. In view ofthe continuous increase in prices, this seems like a provocation.In the kitchen, where recruitment is made difficult by low wages, atypical hoursand the tightening of conditions for unemployment after the season, chefs areseeing summer coming with apprehension. They get organized and send a letter tomanagement: 16% increase as in the branch where it's on strike! The ultimatum isclear: July 14, a public holiday, in the middle of the season. The management isplayful, it tries to defuse the conflict. But she quickly makes concessions when,on the appointed day, almost all of the kitchens in the group's Holiday sector close.At the same time, the sports management teams establish demands by center and bydiscipline. On July 29, a first day of strike canceled the activities of severalsites. The strike is then renewed every Friday so as to impact all stays.Seasonal and permanent: same direction, same fight!The seasonal workers were among the most invested in the mobilization,threatening the UCPA not to return this winter or next summer if nothing changed.The CGT supported the mobilization through petitions, putting its networks at theservice of the mobilized employees. It has endeavored to build union unity at thebase, an essential condition for bringing the negotiations to a successfulconclusion without the movement being confiscated by the majority unions, whichrely above all on the permanent executives of the group.This unprecedented alliance of a determined mobilization of the most precariousemployees and the trade unions established in the group will have made itpossible to obtain exceptional commitments from the management of the UCPA,including a 5% increase for almost all the employees. In addition, aware of thebalance of power established by the strike a few weeks earlier, the managementagreed to almost triple the envelope provided for at the start of thenegotiations (with the 5% therefore).
