 We know the role played by revolutionary trade unionists in the birth of the

Communist Party (CP) in France. If the Russian Revolution had an important
influence, the butchery of the war that began in 1914, social inequalities and
injustices, capitalist exploitation motivated above all those who were the labor
movement of the time. ---- Based on the Angevin realities of the time, documented
by numerous archives, Frédéric Dabouis reveals how revolutionary trade unionists,
communists, libertarians, built this common organization, while pursuing vigorous
debates: on "the relationship between parties and unions or class alliances, but
also the attitude to adopt towards religion and vis-à-vis anticlericalism". This
unitary and pluralist dynamic has led to new problems: "the arrival of a
revolutionary feminist wave which is not content to claim the right to vote but
also demands real equality, particularly in terms of salary, and calls into
question male dominance[...]. Also emerges the affirmation of the right of the
peoples of the colonies to claim their independence.

The war of 1914-1918, the strikes of 1919-1920, the question of joining the
Communist International, the first purges within the CP, punctuate the decade
studied by the author. A short revolutionary moment[1], seen from Anjou... A
century has passed, it would be stupid to transpose this story to the
contemporary situation; it would be harmful not to draw reflections from it, for
example on the opportunity of joint work between currents claiming to belong to
different branches of the revolutionary workers' movement.
