November 20 is Trans Day of Remembrance, also called TDoR for its English name
Trans Day of Remembrance. On this important day for the trans community aroundthe world, trans people commemorate their murdered fellows. ---- The TDoR wasborn in 1999 on the internet through the " Remembering our dead " project oftrans activist Gwendoline Smith. The founding of this project follows the murderof Rita Hester, an African-American trans woman. ---- Since then, severalassociations across the globe have organized a day of action for the TDoR. InFrance, it began in Paris for the year 2002 at the initiative of the Center forAid, Research and Information on Transsexuality and Gender Identity (CARITIG).Today, the TDoR gives rise to mobilizations in all the major cities of thecountry on the initiative of local associations of trans people. The Transrespect Versus Transphobia Worldwide collective gives, thanks to itsTrans Murder Monitoring project, the following statistics for the year 2021 : 375trans and non-binary people were murdered, which represents an increase of 7%compared to 2020 ; 96 % of the victims are women and/or transfeminines ; 58% weresex workers; in the United States, 89% of murdered trans people are racialized;in Europe, 43% of deaths are migrants. For the year 2021, 375 trans and non-binary people were murdered, whichrepresents a 7% increase compared to 2020.These statistics are indicative of several mechanics within transphobia. First, the fact that women constitute the majority of victims highlights the downgradingof trans women as a result of their transition.Indeed, they are, in the same way as cis women, victims of sexism, from streetharassment to feminicides. These phenomena intensify the transphobia that thesewomen face. Julia Serano called this compound oppression transmisogyny.State institutions insensitive to this violenceThe most famous evidence of this phenomenon of transmisogyny is the infamousTrans Panic Defense in the United States. This means that a violent reaction tothe revelation of the trans identity of a sexual partner is a mitigatingcircumstance in the eyes of criminal justice. This defense is still present inthe laws of 38 states. Moreover, racism and poverty are factors that aggravate the transphobiaexperienced, as shown by the majority proportion of racialized trans victims.State institutions remain insensitive to this violence. In France, manyinvestigations into the murders of trans people are at a standstill, if indeedthey have started. The trans struggle cannot therefore be carried out independently of other socialstruggles. In addition to being a fight against patriarchy, it is also a fightagainst racism and capitalism. To carry it out, let's not kneel before the State, everything goes through thestruggle and everything goes through ourselves!Jade (UCL Grand-Paris South)https://www.unioncommunistelibertaire.org/?TdoR-en-memoire-de-nos-adelphes-assassine-es_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.caSPREAD THE INFORMATION
