The two organizers of the popular uprising and the Parmesan resistance, members
of the Arditi del Popolo, were the trade unionist and socialist militant GuidoPicelli and the anarchist Antonio Cieri. Both continued their anti-fascistcommitment in Italy first before engaging on the Spanish front where both founddeath in 1937. ---- In December 1922, Picelli dissolved the Arditi del Popolo andcreated the Soldati in Parma del Popolo (secret action groups) active during thefirst months of 1923. He was arrested on May 5, 1923 with 36 other communistmilitants for having organized a plot against the powers of the state. Picellileft the PSI to join the PCI under whose banner he was elected deputy in 1934.With his parliamentary immunity, he then tirelessly traveled the country to keepthe communist networks alive. On May 1, 1924, he was arrested for the fifth timeas a deputy for unfurling a large red flag from the balcony of the Chamber ofDeputies in protest against the advancement of Workers' Day to April 21.In November 1926, following the promulgation of fascist laws, Picelli wasdeprived of any parliamentary mandate, he was then arrested and sentenced to fiveyears of exile, which he served in Lampedusa and Lipari, after having spent sevenmonths in prison in Syracuse and Milazzo. He moved to France at the beginning of1932 and traveled to Belgium and then to the USSR. before enlisting in 1936 inthe international brigades within the Garibaldi battalion. He died on the frontin January 1937.Antonio Cieri for his part went into exile in 1923. He continued his activity asan anarchist militant and created the newspaper L'Umanità nova in Paris in 1925then La Protesta and La vecchia Umanità nova in the early 1930s with CamilloBerneri.
