1877, but it was crushed by government troops. After a period in prison, one of
many periods in his life followed, in which he had to flee his Italian homeland
into exile. ---- Initially a proponent of "actual propaganda," Malatesta later
abandoned this strategy and advocated organized anarchism. Although he supported
the participation of anarchists in the unions, he distanced himself from the idea
that the union movement alone could bring about the social revolution. On the
other hand, he supported the formation of independent anarchist organizations
alongside the unions.

During his life Malatesta wrote for many publications of the anarchist movement
and founded several newspapers himself. In his articles and essays, he formulated
important anarchist thoughts and principles with a clarity that, then as now,
gave many people access to revolutionary ideas.

Through his intensive writing and organizing activities and his many trips and
stays in exile in different parts of the world, Malatesta shaped the anarchist
movement in Italy, in Europe and beyond for decades.

Towards the end of his life Malatesta witnessed the rise of Italian fascism and
with it the growing repression of the revolutionary movement and press.
Nevertheless, he continued to try to spread the anarchist idea until he finally
died of a lung disease in 1932.

His extraordinary life and his fight for a society free of domination are still
an inspiration for many people worldwide today. We would therefore like to
commemorate Errico Malatesta today.
