The Radicals of the Union: without struggles there is no future. ---- Just today,
at the end of two intense months, the congress assemblies of the CGIL of Livornoare ending: in many workplaces, male and female workers have been called toconfront the two theses presented at the XIX congress of the CGIL. ---- Togetherwith a fierce troop of "Compañeros" we threw ourselves headlong into thisexperience aware that, if the current working conditions are characterized bypoverty and exploitation, the largest Italian trade union certainly could notpresent itself in the assemblies looking at the mirror and praising the greatwork done. ---- The decision to support an alternative document was not theresult of improvisation but a decision matured over time, personally I had manyperplexities because knowing the structure of the CGIL well, I knew that if thisappointment were not reached properly organized we would have ended up injeopardy in the presence of an apparatus well prepared to manage these dynamics,consequently putting at risk the stability of a network of Delegates and Workersbuilt up over the years.But when rationality prompted me to say that we were not ready as a group of maleand female workers to make such a choice, during some Steering Committees, theydecided to challenge us, first a National Secretary then a Regional Secretary byattacking us for our criticisms made to the line of the CGIL and pointing thefinger at us, they said phrases like "If you present yourself with thealternative document you will find us well equipped" and again "See you in Congress!"Here is the spark that got us going, misplaced attacks that actually exposed alltheir weakness. From that moment the work began to build an alternative, in addition to thenational recomposition of the two left-wing trade union areas CGIL, "Democrazia eLavoro" and "Riconquistiamo tutto" also the Filt of Livorno and the Lega SPI ofVenturina decided to join the project and so over 50 compañeras and compañerasmade themselves available to present the congress document "The Roots of theUnion without struggles there is no future" in the basic assemblies of theprovince of Livorno.Those who thought that our approach to these assemblies was similar to the"descent of the barbarians" had to change their minds, with determination anddesire to change the current state of things we presented ourselves inconfrontation with the workers well aware of the political context that surroundsus and with a very clear idea in mind, transform resignation into a desire forredemption.We met thirteen thousand other people including port workers, teachers,metalworkers, health workers, cooperation workers, trade workers, entertainmentworkers, communication workers, civil servants, private workers, precarious youngpeople and pensioners; all these people, after having listened to us, recountedtheir difficulties and laid bare all the contradictions they are forced toexperience on a daily basis in their workplace.Examples are starvation wages, trampled rights, impossible working hours, sixhundred euro pensions, chronic precariousness, the dismantling of welfare,non-existent security conditions; all rubble that we are forced to try toreassemble and represent in trade unions after thirty years of liberalgovernments that have put profits at the center of their political action.Thirty years in which they managed to divide male and female workers withhundreds of different contractual forms, pitting us against each other in a warbetween the poor which, with the help of an accomplice press, laid thefoundations for the final masterpiece: the belief that the real enemy of workersis the recipient of the citizen's income and not the millionaire entrepreneur whoevades taxes and who moves the registered offices abroad to elude the Italian taxman.It's been two intense months but they served to confirm that only through theunity of workers and their struggles can we reverse this trend that has nowbecome structural.Those who wondered why the Teatro Goldoni in Livorno was chosen on June 29 as theplace for the presentation of the congress document "The Roots of the Union,without struggles there is no future" today has their answers, 3420 male andfemale workers out of 13700 voted and supported the second document.A percentage equal to 25.10% anAs Workers we will therefore have the opportunity to participate in thereorganization of the Chamber of Labor of the Province of Livorno and to make ourvoice heard both in regional and national bodies, both in the categories and atthe confederal level of the CGIL.For us, who have been working inside and outside the CGIL for years to uniteworkers and connect disputes, this is a great source of pride, despite theawareness of a demanding challenge and a long journey to undertake; with thegratification, however, of having reached a good starting point.Thanks to all the Compañeros who have thrown their hearts and souls into thisexperience.PS.
