The 34-year prison sentence imposed on 17 No Muos activists by the Gela court can
be read as a sign of the times; not that up to now the judges have gone easy onit, but - as we explain in another article in this issue - the climate iscertainly more incriminated, as demonstrated by the provisions against socialrebels, anarchists and movements. The sentences can also be read as an attempt toattack the movement in a phase of relative weakness. Specifically, on 1 March2014 the movement decided to implement a choice to break with the chain ofprohibitions placed by the police station on the right to demonstrate.Libertarian Sicily of March 2014, it was no coincidence that he titled the frontpage article: "Disobedience". ---- Below is the press release issued by the NOMUOS Movement:On November 3, the Gela court issued a first instance sentence for 17 companiesof the NoMUOS movement, sentencing them to two years' imprisonment each, for atotal of 34 years' imprisonment. The alleged facts date back to March 1, 2014, the date on which a processionviolated the prescriptions of the police headquarters to cross that piece ofterritory that had been taken away for too long for US military interests. Thatdemonstration responded to the construction of MUOS, which had recently beencompleted two years behind US Navy plans; delay possible only thanks to theresistance of the movement which, without sparing itself, blocked the progress ofthe works by opposing their own bodies in front of the military vehicles and theworkers. On that day, therefore, with anger and determination, the movement crossed theUlmo district and the areas adjacent to the base, without letting itself behindered by the prescriptions and deployment of the forces of order. The trial was quite long and we don't need to read the reasons for the sentenceto glimpse the forcing and political nature of this decision. Not at allsurprising given the general climate, whereby laws, preventive measures anddisproportionate sentences are applied with the intention of managing andsuppressing dissent. We express our solidarity and complicity with the condemned. The sentence of the Palermo Regional Administrative Court on the latest workscarried out in the MUOS area counterbalanced the conviction of Gela. Let theMovement speak:According to the Sicily TAR, the latest works built in the MUOS area are illegal. On 11 November, the TAR of Palermo issued a sentence in the proceeding betweenthe Municipality of Niscemi and the Ministry of Defence, following the appeal bythe Municipality against the authorizations of the United States Navy for somereinforcement works concerning the MUOS area.Alongside the Municipality of Niscemi also Legambiente and the NO MUOS Movementwith their respective lawyers, all supporting the illegitimacy of the workswithin the Site of Community Interest "Sughereta di Niscemi", as they do notcomply with the rules on landscape matters .The TAR agreed with the Municipality of Niscemi, condemning the Ministry of Defence. The paradox of the story is that, in the meantime, the works had already beencarried out, so much so that the state lawyers had tried to defend themselves bystating that the matter of dispute had ceased. This sentence, although ineffective in its substance (unless the Municipality ofNiscemi requests the demolition of the built works), tells us one thing clearly:within the reserve, and the NRTF-MUOS base of the United States of America ,there are abusive works declared illegitimate by a sentence of the TAR, and it isnot so true that the derogatory regime of the ordinary rules can be used in casessuch as these. The NO MUOS Movement has always supported the illegitimacy of MUOS, supported bynumerous acts of seizure of construction sites, together with its moral andpolitical illegitimacy as an instrument of war and death. The sentence of November 11, in its small way, represents a confirmation of thejust opposition to this work that has raped the ancient Sughereta; and if somesecondary works are today declared abusive, it is evident that the main work isequally so and in a much more serious way.The fight against MUOS and the militarization of the territory continues, untilthe entire area that the Americans have occupied and transformed into an immensefactory of death is restored in its integrity.Initiative on Punta Bianca in Palma di MontechiaroThe story of the Punta Bianca area is emblematic for understanding how much theeconomic and military interests of the great powers are place The militaryexercises should have restarted on October 17, although they had been suspendeddue to the very high quantities of lead found in the area, responsible for themassacre of flora and fauna; but thanks to the protests of the local populationthey were suspended again. However, he must not let his guard down; also because, if the Italian army wereever to leave Punta Bianca definitively, the legitimate claim to reclaim the areamust first be met.(...) Starting from the analyses, from the documents, from the tools produced sofar by the No Muos Movement, we want to involve the people of Agrigento and notonly in a process of awareness and opposition to the presence of the military inPunta Bianca.Saturday 26 November, at 17, the story was analyzed, with a conference in Palmadi Montechiaro, with the help of David Alan Scifo, journalist of LA7, author ofan investigative work on the story of the Punta Bianca reserve.A conference on "ENI's new energy and military colonialism" is scheduled for 10December in Gela, with reports by Daniele Ratti (ENI and its role in the"enlarged Mediterranean" as a synthesis of Italian foreign and defense policy.ENI is the solution to the Energy - Profit - War equation), Andrea Turco (Gela, the Italian gas capital is still a six-legged city), Pippo Gurrieri (Gela andNiscemi, comparing disasters), Erika Garozzo and Paul Scicolone. The conferenceis promoted by No Incinerators Gela, the Antimilitarist Assembly and the NO MUOSMovement. Libertarian Sicily will dedicate the entire seventh page of the Januaryissue to this important initiative in the Italian capital of birth defects causedby environmental pollution caused by 70 years of ENI presence.https://www.sicilialibertaria.it/_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
