What began as an atypical end of the year, with lots of rain instead of the sun
characteristic of early summer, turned into one of the biggest disasters everexperienced by Bahian communities. In the last few days we have followed theflood of news about floods, landslides and entire cities submerged by water, inall around 136 cities are in a state of emergency, especially in the Southregion, which was the most affected. ---- It's the worst flood in the last 35years, say the headlines, a real catastrophe, there are about 136 citiesaffected, more than 60 thousand people homeless. ---- We are not surprised by thelack of commotion from the federal government. Thanks to political strife fromabove, xenophobia and racism directed at our region, the northeast, andespecially Bahia, we are not a priority.We are seen by the south-southeast axis of the country when our waters arecrystalline and calm, when our people dance and welcome them with an open smile.Not now, not while we succumb in the middle of the mud, which is not a merechance of nature.We know that the disasters that befall us are anything but natural. Even thoughattention is already focused elsewhere, it wasn't long ago that our beaches wereflooded with oil, a criminal spill that hit fishing and shellfish communitieshard. Also the waters that rise more than normal, more than has been seen inthree decades, is the result of the predatory exploitation of nature, disorderlyurbanization, neglect by the State, climate changes that do not begin or end in 2021.Many quilombola and indigenous communities were affected and devastated by thefloods, it is mainly from them that FAQUIR has sought to publicize and supportemergency campaigns. These communities know what ancestral knowledge teaches us,it's not the fault of the river, the rain, or the water. The fault lies with therelationship we establish with nature, with the imposition of capital against ourterritories. That bill always arrives, sooner or later in all regions, and weknow that those who pay the price are always the poorest communities, are alwaysthose and those who cannot do much in the face of the work of a lifetime flowingdown the street . It is always those at the bottom who face the negative balanceof profits from mega companies and the State itself.At that moment, the solidarity of our people also emerges from the mud andwreckage, hundreds of fundraising campaigns and volunteers focus on giving someimmediate support to people who have lost everything. There are cities where noteven the schools can serve as a place for the homeless, as they were alsodestroyed, where you need drinking water and matches, food that doesn't need tobe cooked and everything else basic.It has always been us for us, and at this moment we are also counting on thesolidarity of our fellow men and women from other states. But that does not meanthat we will close our eyes to the omission of this Government, they owe us,every penny spent on Bolsonaro family revelries, every penny diverted andoverpriced, a wealth that must serve the people.The damage is incalculable for thousands of lives, despair takes over our dailylives and we will not remain silent in the face of this. We cannot naturalizethese events, waiting for the next tragedy around every corner.
