Dear friends–
My name is Alexandra and I am writing to you from Burundi, where love is still a crime. Like so many other African countries, the society in Burundi is largely homophobic.
Things got even worse in 2009 when same-sex relations were officially declared a crime punishable by a prison sentence. As a result, being LGBT+ in Burundi means living in fear. Fear that you'll be chased out of your family home, fear that you will be kicked out of school, fear that you will be denied employment... the list is long.
As an LGBT+ person and an activist, I know this fear. But instead of despairing, it motivated me to work on a project that shows what it's like to live as a queer Burundian.
Together with All Out, I spoke to three LGBT+ people living in Burundi and recorded their testimonies. I would like to share their powerful stories with you now.
Ommy*, Lynn* and Simone* are finding ways to survive despite the difficulties they face. These videos portray their touching stories about the reality of their daily lives. In their testimonies, they express their hope for the future of the LGBT+ community in Burundi – a life without discrimination.
In this same spirit, Luc, I hope that these stories will help raise awareness about what the LGBT+ community in Burundi is going through and contribute to the change that we want to see. So that no LGBT+ Burundian will have to live in fear.
Thanks for going All Out, Alexandra, Campaigns Fellow at All Out. (she/her)
