Clément Osé studied at Sciences-Po. And then, he branched off: he settled in a
collective farm, where the goal is to live independently, as soberly as possible. One day, he receives a message from one of his former classmates, Noémie Calais, who tells him that she and he are almost neighbours: she has settled in the Gersand is converting to pig farming! Intrigued, he asks her if he can visit her. Sheaccepts: he goes there, returns there, and again, and over time and exchanges, together, they have built this book, which alternates story and analyzes ofClément, and excerpts from Noémie's notebooks. ---- The shape makes it verypleasant to read, and the background quickly turns out to be fascinating. First, the daily life of a farm built to produce - Noémie and her associates sell eggs, vegetables, cereals, cheeses, and pork products, on the local markets - is toldto us by someone who is not totally foreign to this universe, but who is moreneo-rural than a peasant. The state against the general interestThe political question therefore arises quite quickly: what meaning is posedbehind this productivity ? However, the approach of Noémie and the otherinhabitants of the Bourdets farm, if it involves producing food, puts thequestion of meaning at the heart of practices, in the most radical way possible. And faced with this ethic, we can only hope to be able to find food produced inthis way as quickly as possible everywhere! The other really stimulating aspect of the book is that it allows us to get outof the Manichaeism of the debate "for or against breeding". Clément Osé,vegetarian, is a little jostled by the cut-out scenes (described quite crudely).Throughout the book and reflections, we discover that the pros and cons areunfair, that there are several ways to kill, and that if the passage to theslaughterhouse is never a pleasure, to refuse this option completely. may seemabove ground as the practice of breeding has been integrated into food productionfor millennia. The opposition between organic farming and conventional farming also loses itsforce when we learn that Noémie (who works organically) benefits from the supportand wise advice of Catherine, whose breeding she has taken over, even if sheworked conventionally. Noémie has reduced the number of pigs raised and adoptedother ways of doing things, but Catherine's experience comes in handy when facedwith the unexpected. Between the two women, much more solidarity and exchanges ofpractices than conflicts! Finally, this book is a successful relay of the exhausting fight that the "smalland small" farmers must carry out, those of which Noémie is a part, who aim forquality without giving up on ethics, faced with the standards imposed by theState. The regulations that are supposed to be respected by breeders are adjustedas closely as possible to intensive farming models, with the direct consequenceof putting human-scale farms in the face of a Kafkaesque dilemma: either abandontheir fair practices, however based on respect and consideration for animal life,or else disobey, at the risk of colossal fines, or even prison sentences! Theabsurd questions that are very unfairly confronted by people who try to restoremeaning to the heart of our food are very clearly transcribed, and it isdifficult to close these pages without being angry!Melanie (UCL Grand-Paris South)Noémie Calais and Clément Osé, Rather Nourish.
