The recent news from Castilla y León is not an anecdote: it is the most common
daily practice. Although the focus now points to Castilian and Leonese territory,the problems that the proposal entails are common in other CCAAs and are part ofthe reactionary strategy of the far-right party -there is no other definition forthe formation of García-Gallardo and company- to suppress the right to abortion.A crucial right for women, which marked a milestone in the history of feministstruggles, which is still being fought for in many places and which continues tobe a bargaining chip for politicians. ---- The VOX measures - from which the PP,its partner in the government, has shyly distanced itself and not forcefullyenough, although no other attitude than complicity could be expected - includethe obligation for health professionals to offer the pregnant person listening tothe fetal heartbeat or a 4D ultrasound before being able to access a voluntarytermination of pregnancy (IVE). All of this means that equity and quality of health protection are notguaranteed for women and pregnant people, who are running unnecessary risks dueto the systematic mistreatment to which the health system subjects them before anIVE.The equal access to free abortion proclaimed by the law is belied by the figures,which speak for themselves: nationwide, in 2021, only 15.67% of IVEs have beenperformed in public centers. And, both public and private, only 13% of them tookplace in hospitals. The anti-abortion wave supposes, therefore and fundamentally,the opposition to abortion for the working class: a story that is not unknown tous. The class gap makes what should be a right become a privilege. This isrelated to the situation of general access to healthcare, increasinglyimpoverished, and with the deprivation of so many other rights that are, at leasttheoretically, fundamental: education, housing, sexual freedom...Health and safety for those who decide on an IVE are not guaranteed in thiscountry: let no one tell us otherwise. The decision to abort -for whateverreason- cannot be subject to moral fluctuations and the administrative obstaclesof politicians, doctors or priests.As Rosa Jiménez sang in the Coplas Retrogradas together with Chicho SánchezFerlosio, "although many don't care about the war, they become wild when onemiscarries."
