Dear New Yorkers,

It’s our third winter living with COVID-19, and infection and hospitalization rates are ticking up again.

Hospitalizations in New York City have risen 46% in two months, according to THE CITY’s coronavirus tracker. And a new variant, XBB.1.5, now accounts for 72% of new cases in the Northeast; CDC officials say it’s the most transmissible variant yet.

Meanwhile, people who got sick during earlier waves of infection are still feeling the effects — and coping with lingering symptoms.

Long COVID care is evolving as the medical community contends with the emerging health crisis. And because it is relatively new, New Yorkers living with it often have a hard time finding the correct care and support.

THE CITY’s MISSING THEM project — created to memorialize and report on the pandemic’s impact on New Yorkers — talked to clinicians, caregivers and people with long COVID to compile resources for medical, social and financial support.

Read our long COVID guide here, which includes an interactive map of long COVID clinics, guidance on how to choose a doctor, a list of local support groups and advice from New Yorkers living with post-COVID health issues.

Some other items of note:

  • Seven thousand nurses at Mt. Sinai and Montefiore Medical Center went on strike Monday, with EMS vans and cars honking their horns in support in a scene that one nurse on the picket line said evoked “back in the COVID days when they used to clap for us.” Read more here.

  • Following last summer’s major lifeguard shortage, the Parks Department is trying to buoy recruitment by starting early, tweaking the qualifying test and even offering remedial swim classes to would-be workers who just miss the mark. Want to watch the city’s pools and beaches? Here’s how to get the gig.

  • Thousands of city renters deal with a lack of heat in their apartments every winter. If you’re among them, here’s our guide on how to manage a no-heat situation with your landlord.

  • See how New York City’s doing with our newsroom’s economic recovery tracker.

  • It’s community board application season. Are you community board-curious? Ever wondered how bike lanes, liquor licenses and new developments are approved in your neighborhood? Read our explainer on what the boards really do, and how to join.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Tuesday's Weather Rating: 5/10. The sun is in control today, and temperatures will reach the mid 40s by this afternoon. We've got a nice breeze going all day, too. The vibes are pretty good, especially for early January!

THE KICKER: An elephant-sized tale is spurring a massive hunt for mammoth tusks allegedly dumped in the East River decades ago. No, really: A bone collector made the claim about a secret stash of bones on Joe Rogan’s super popular podcast last week, and would-be treasure hunters have flocked to the area. The only problem? The claim is based, supposedly, on a report by the American Museum of Natural History — and the museum says it’s bunk. What a town!

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Tuesday.

Love,
THE CITY
