Dear New Yorkers,

Red-flag orders have been on the books in New York for years, giving judges the option to allow law enforcement to seize firearms from people deemed mentally unstable and violent.

But the policy was hardly ever used — until last summer. That’s when Gov. Kathy Hochul signed gun reform laws requiring prosecutors and police to request red-flag orders for anyone they say is likely to seriously harm themselves or others. Hochul’s action followed the racist mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket.

In the months since the new law took effect, city district attorneys have obtained 53 red-flag orders. Before last August, DAs had gotten only six such orders in four years.

THE CITY obtained and examined court records from many of the red-flag orders made since last summer. Here’s what we found.

Some other items of note:

  • Bicycle racks at 37 subway stations, expanding bike paths on some MTA bridges and placing front-of-bus bike racks on three more bus lines — it’s all part of a new plan from the MTA to better accommodate 1.9 million New Yorkers who get around the city on two wheels.

  • Why are slashings surging in city jails? There were 477 such incidents last year, up from 40 in 2017. We asked four people with inside knowledge about the crisis and what can be done: A detainee who was attacked on Rikers Island, a former jail medical clinician, a one-time acting commissioner, and the judicially appointed manager of a juvenile detention facility.

  • Montefiore Medical Center allegedly told newly hired nurses they would lose their jobs if they joined their fellow union members on strike. That’s according to a complaint filed with the National Labor Relations Board yesterday, as the nurse’s strike continued a third day.

  • Professor Christina Greer and Harry Siegel dig into Kathy Hochul’s first state of the state as New York’s elected governor on a new episode of the FAQ.NYC podcast. Listen here.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Thursday's Weather Rating: 2/10. Much warmer again, with high temperatures in the low 50s. That’s significantly warmer than average for this time of year. Cloudy, rainy and humid with intermittent showers throughout the day. The vibes are very bad and quite strange...

THE KICKER: They banged their last trash can and swept their last stage. After three decades, Stomp has ended its run at the Orpheum Theatre. This week, workers cleared out the show’s iconic props and left them on the curb in the East Village, EV Grieve reports. We must know: Who got their hands on one of the Stomp plungers? (No, really; email us.)

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Thursday.

Love,
THE CITY
