Dear New Yorkers,
Tomorrow, the chair of the beleaguered New York City Housing Authority is set to announce he’s stepping down, THE CITY has learned.
Chairman Gregory Russ was notable for masterminding a financial rescue plan for the public housing system — while himself enjoying a generous compensation deal that included a Tribeca apartment and a six-figure salary.
Once Russ is gone, his job will become strictly voluntary with a minimal monthly stipend of $250 to attend board meetings.
During his three years running NYCHA, Russ collected a salary of between $414,000 and $430,000 as both CEO and chair. When he spilt his role last fall and became chair only, he still earned as much as Mayor Eric Adams and more than Gov. Kathy Hochul.
