Dear New Yorkers,

Tomorrow, the chair of the beleaguered New York City Housing Authority is set to announce he’s stepping down, THE CITY has learned.

Chairman Gregory Russ was notable for masterminding a financial rescue plan for the public housing system — while himself enjoying a generous compensation deal that included a Tribeca apartment and a six-figure salary.

Once Russ is gone, his job will become strictly voluntary with a minimal monthly stipend of $250 to attend board meetings.

During his three years running NYCHA, Russ collected a salary of between $414,000 and $430,000 as both CEO and chair. When he spilt his role last fall and became chair only, he still earned as much as Mayor Eric Adams and more than Gov. Kathy Hochul.

  • A former deputy chief actuary has brought a federal bias suit against City Hall alleging he was denied a promotion because of his race and sexual orientation — not his ability to handle billions of dollars of pension and retirement investments.

  • Strolling right along, the MTA is adding even more space for baby carriages on more than 1,000 city buses. Transit officials say its pilot program for strollers on buses has been “overwhelmingly positive.”

  • John Lennon said “I am the Walrus.” Eric Adams says “I am the Colgate,” and that he’s starting his own newsletter to spread the word about all the stuff he says he’s getting done that the press won’t fairly report. All that and much more gets discussed on the latest episode of the FAQ NYC podcast.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Wednesday's Weather Rating: 2/10. Oof. We start out cloudy and damp with highs in the mid 40s. By afternoon, any fleeting snowflakes are overtaken by rain. Periods of heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms continue into tonight. The vibes are really struggling.

THE KICKER: “They are my feather babies. It was a hard decision but we decided to send them. Phil will be the one that will suffer the most because he’s the entertainer,” said Angela Robinson, caregiver to the pair of peacocks at St. John the Divine, who had their retirement party this week.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Wednesday.

Love,
THE CITY
