While women are confronted with guilt-ridden speeches about the management of
their fertility, men mostly grow up ignoring the theme. Faced with thisinequality, here are some elements of reflection on testicular contraception, oneof the ways, among others, of empowering men in the management of fertility. ----Testicular contraception[1]is a subject which, in feminist circles, occasionallycomes up on the table. However, testicular contraception has a long and rootedhistory in anarchist circles, and most of the methods currently used have been inuse for sometimes a few decades, even a hundred years. But when it comes tomeeting the costs and constraints of contraception, men are not in a hurry, andtesticular contraception remains extremely marginal and underused.CONTRACEPTION, EUGENICS...The use of vasectomy for contraceptive purposes began at the end of the 19thcentury. At that time contraception was promoted by the eugenics andneo-Malthusian movements. It was therefore marked by very strong class relations, the objective being to limit in particular the reproduction of the workingclasses[2]. The development of contraception will generally be limited after theFirst World War. The fall in the birth rate and the excess mortality linked tothe war will lead to the adoption of several repressive populationist laws from1918. In particular the "rogue law" which represses "contraceptive propaganda andthe adopted in 1920, to which will be added, in 1923, a law which correctsabortion to better repress it[3].Handmade penis rings. The device allows the testicles to be raised and maintainedin the inguinal canals.SAMUEL FLAMBARDOf course, the repression was aimed above all at women, and in particular atabortion. But these laws, by criminalizing all forms of contraception, have alsoprevented the development of vasectomy. In particular, the so-called "sterilizedBordeaux" trial led to the conviction of Austrian doctor N. Bartosek, a pioneerin the practice of vasectomy and having essentially practiced within libertariancircles.... TO THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN.It was from 1967 that the law of 1920 was abolished, in particular with theNeuwirth law, which decriminalized access to information and the practice ofcontraception, under pressure from the feminist movement, and resulting in thedevelopment of medical research on contraceptive methods, focusing on femalecontraception. These methods have been a source of real emancipation for women, freeing them from the control of men when it came to controlling the occurrenceof pregnancies. This reality is not that of the majority of men who can easily pretend to ignorethe consequences of the search for their own pleasure[4]. Therefore, to speak oftesticular contraception is to question male privilege. The challenge of makingmen responsible for the construction of egalitarian relationships between sexclasses then appears. It is this question in particular that the Ardecom group(Association for the research and development of male contraception) has tried totackle head on.But this contraceptive activism has unfortunately fallen into oblivion, and themethods they have developed have remained largely unknown to the general public, ignored by the medical profession, and neglected by scientific research. We canhowever note some legal advances, as in 2001, the legalization of vasectomy. Ingeneral, the permanent oblivion in which testicular contraceptives remainconfined testifies to one thing: a social class does not leave a position ofpower out of goodwill, awareness of inequality, or activism, even of the extremeleft. .The few people who begin to take an interest in testicular contraception oftenfind, after one or two hours of research, a good reason to abandon their goodintentions: maintaining the status quo is often much better than an obstaclecourse. . However, if the difficulties are very real, the methods ofcontraception are numerous, effective and known. Thermal contraceptives aim toincrease the temperature of the testicles by pushing them up the inguinal canals, thus hindering spermatogenesis. Several tools can be used for this purpose:slip[5], jogstrap or ring. Hormonal contraception exists today in the form ofweekly injections of testosterone enanthate. The "pill for men", the onlyhorizon that seems possible in the media, exists, but for the moment requirestaking a large number of pills on a daily basis. Finally, the vasectomy aims tocut the vas deferens (which transport sperm from the testicles to the prostate). It is currently the most widely used method of testicular contraception in theworld. However, in France, only 1% of men use it against 20% in Great Britain forexample.A CONSTRAINT FOR WOMENThe political stakes of testicular contraception remain numerous. There is a lackof medical studies, the vast majority of doctors are poorly informed, and thedevices encounter great difficulties in being approved. But the main obstacle tothe development of testicular contraception is undoubtedly a lack of interestamong men for devices that would make them lose their carelessness.
