 One year after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the NO MUOS Movement takes to the

streets in Niscemi. In this long year Niscemi, with the MUOS, and Sigonella with
his spy drones, have remotely guided the Ukrainian army in the actions of attack
against the Russian armed forces, placing Sicily in the front row in a conflict
that is only apparently distant. In this long year, as we have written, Sicily
has been an island in the Black Sea, a territory of war, and all of this has
passed through the heads of its inhabitants. ----   Since the MUOS came into
operation, from Niscemi at all times the United States wages its wars all over
the world; the Sigonella base, the main military facility in the Mediterranean,
and mother base of MUOS, develops its action in the hottest areas of the Middle
East, Western Asia, North, Saharan, Sub-Saharan and Eastern Africa.

The fate of an entire island and its population has been mortgaged by secret
agreements and by an incessant militarization, which moreover tends to accentuate
(see the special on page 7 of this issue).

Demonstrating in Niscemi has an increasingly meaningful political value; against
our will, this place has become the world capital of capitalist carnage; it is
not the only one, but it is our home, a land that belongs to us, where spaces,
destinies and dreams of those who in this area would have the right to plan a
better life are usurped. The challenge of the NO MUOS Movement, when it defined
its perspective, was to transform Niscemi into the capital of anti-militarism and
the fight against war. The events of the last year are yet another confirmation
of this perspective.

Nonetheless, the battle always faces an uphill path; nothing is taken for
granted; the media bombardment transforms the real bombings into spectacles that
once seen, and then seen again, many avoid seeing again. A déjà vu that must be
canceled from everyday life.

A year of war has not filled the pizzas, except in the very first weeks; a year
of war has sown habituation, resignation, detachment.

Demonstrating on 25 February in Niscemi is choosing to continue to go against the
tide, keeping the bar straight, as we have done in recent years, when there were
no wars in Europe, and many did not even know how to pronounce the acronym MUOS,
and above all they did not even know what it meant. Amnesia, indifference,
underestimations like knots that are now coming to a head, handing us
anti-militarist, pacifist, no war, isolated, minority, weak movements.

Yet we continue. As we have been doing for 11 years.

On the 25th we will concentrate on Largo Mascione, where we will give life to a
series of interventions; then we will move in procession towards the square,
where we will continue to address the main issues related to the war: escalation,
military spending, Italian involvement, the role of NATO, opposition to NATO and
Russia starting from our territory, and so on.

The program for this end of February should have begun on the 21st in Catania, at
the Faculty of Political Sciences, with a conference by Daniele Ratti, of the
anti-militarist assembly in Milan, who would have dealt with the geopolitical
framework of the enlarged Mediterranean, the role of ENI in the strategies energy
and Italian military (missions), the growing centrality of this area in world
economic policies. Daniele would then have had to move to Palermo on the 24th, to
participate in the city procession against the war, intervening in the final
phase. On the 25th he would have intervened in Niscermi as the main speaker of
the self-training meeting that the NO MUOS Movement organized at the Municipal
Library, to then be among the comrades who intervened in the two squares of the
afternoon demonstration. Unfortunately Daniele was hit by a stroke on January 29,
which will lead to the postponement of some initiatives in Catania and Niscemi,
obviously not the two marches.

While we wish the comrade to pass this difficult test unscathed, we are certain
that his precious contribution to our struggle is only postponed.

Among the other initiatives scheduled there will probably be a demonstration in
front of the Sigonella base, currently still to be defined. after a year of war
