Dear New Yorkers,

“I think he handled it appropriately.”

That’s what Mayor Eric Adams had to say about how the NYPD’s chief of department, Jeffrey Maddrey, responded to the arrest of retired officer Kruythoff Forrester — who walked free after allegedly menacing three kids with a gun.

A trove of videos published by THE CITY showed Forrester being released, with his arrest voided, roughly 90 minutes after the arrivals of Maddrey and another chief at Brownsville’s 73rd Precinct.

At City Hall on Friday, Adams said he has “the utmost confidence in Chief Maddrey.

But the mothers of the three youths say that the events of that night continue to traumatize their sons; they filed a civil lawsuit against Forrester last November

“I cannot stop the trauma or the fear,” Crystal Merritt, the mom of two of the boys involved, told THE CITY when the lawsuit was filed.

Some other items of note:

  • Flushing Councilmember Sandra Ung is calling for a crackdown on unlicensed street vendors in Flushing, whose presence “creates a sense of lawlessness that attracts criminal elements” and hurts store owners. But vendors told THE CITY that they can’t be deterred because they don’t have other options: “‘If I had money, of course I’d open up a storefront.”

  • Railfans flocked to the A train for a big reveal: New York’s first new subway car in years. “I just hope the train is photogenic today, you know?” one young train fanatic told THE CITY as he waited for the R211’s inaugural voyage through Manhattan.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Monday's Weather Rating: 1/10. Comically bad. Showers this morning give way to a steady (occasionally heavy) cold rain through tonight. Gusty winds are expected, too. Rain mixes with snow in the interior and possibly parts of the city tonight. The vibes are simply not good.

THE KICKER: It’s opening week for New York Now: Home, a new photography exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. The show includes images and video footage taken in recent years that documents the city before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Admission to the exhibit is free with a $20 suggested donation.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Monday.

Love,

THE CITY
