Dear New Yorkers,

The labor agreement covering more than 9,000 nurses who work in the city’s 11 public hospitals expires today. And as contract talks ramp up, union leaders are looking to get their members at least as much money as private sector nurses.

The difference between the wages of two groups of health workers is vast: Public sector nurses make an average of $12,000 less per year than their counterparts at private hospitals, according to union reps.

To bring those wages closer together, union negotiators are looking to enforce an obscure agreement, not used since the 90’s, that would match their salaries with what workers earn at certain private sector facilities — including Mount Sinai Hospital and Columbia-Presbyterian.

Some other items of note:
  • Tenants in Harlem have asked a judge to penalize their landlord for a building plagued with multiple problems: rats, leaks and a lack of heat or hot water. The owner of the West 141st Street building was already ordered by a court in December to make things right in the property. But weeks later, residents say “everything is not handled.”

  • Nearly 58% of city kids who were eligible for specialized Early Intervention therapies for developmental delays or disabilities did not receive all of the support they’re entitled to, according to new data from the state comptroller reported by our partners at Chalkbeat New York. Nearly 27,000 children are among those who should be eligible.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Thursday's Weather Rating: 5/10. Showers this morning will give way to sunshine and very comfortable conditions. High temps will reach the mid 50's, but a blustery northwest wind will usher in cooler weather later. Feeling very chilly again tonight. The vibes are doing alright!

THE KICKER: Meet the dozen chickens who make their home along the Franklin Avenue shuttle tracks in Brooklyn. The hens — including Fanny, Luna and Mama Odie — are neighborhood favorites. Passersby feed them from a coin-operated vending machine loaded with dried grubs. And on occasion, the flock grows — when people “throw unwanted birds over the fence,” Patch reports.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Thursday.

Love,
THE CITY
