Dear New Yorkers,

It’s the go-to facility for the three police precincts with the most shootings in Queens.

But for years, Jamaica Hospital’s emergency department has been functioning with only one trauma bay.

Now, a state board has given the go-ahead for the medical center to expand and modernize its ER — and add seven more trauma bays.

The move could make a life-or-death difference in an area of New York where a previous analysis by The Trace and Measure of America, in partnership with THE CITY, found that gunshot victims in southern Queens are more likely to die than people shot anywhere else in the five boroughs.

Construction on the project is slated to begin by mid-September.

Some other items of note:

  • The developer and operator of a new climate change research facility on Governors Island has been chosen. Stony Brook University will head up the creation of the hub, a 400,000-square-foot facility that aims to be an incubator for new ideas and technology to slow and adapt to global warming.

  • It’s spring … which means block party season is just around the corner. 🥳💃🎶 Want to shut down traffic and throw a bash with your neighbors this summer? THE CITY wrote a guide on how to do that. (Note: It can take months to get the paperwork processed, so start soon!)

  • A technical glitch in yesterday’s Scoop may have prevented you from clicking on our story about the uptick in subway train collisions with people in the transit system. Sorry if you couldn’t find that article — here it is one more time

  • Remember Gov. Kathy Hochul’s controversial plan to deal with New York’s housing crisis? In case you missed it, here’s our story on how it died. With just two months left in this year’s legislative session, a path forward for her proposals remains all but blocked.

  • We’re just getting started covering the 2023 City Council elections. Primary Day is June 27! And we want to make our reporting better with your help. Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Tuesday's Weather Rating: 8/10. Partly sunny skies return, but it's a bit warmer and less windy than yesterday. It will feel much nicer out there this afternoon with highs in the lower 60s. Still cooler than normal for this time of year, but the vibes are back up!!

THE KICKER: It looks like Aaron Rodgers is leaping from Green Bay to Gang Green. The 39-year-old, four-time league MVP quarterback reportedly will pilot the Jets next season with hopes of landing in the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. Launch a prayer and a “J-E-T-S!” cry to make it happen.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Tuesday.

Love,
THE CITY
