Dear New Yorkers, Last month we gave you a behind-the-scenes look at how two NYPD chiefs quickly intervened in the case of a retired cop, Kruythoff Forrester, who was arrested for allegedly menacing three kids with a gun. One of the two intervening officials was Jeffrey Maddrey, then NYPD chief of community affairs and now chief of department, the highest-ranking uniformed officer in the department. The kids are now speaking publicly about their ordeal in an interview with Hot 97 host Ebro Darden — with one saying he didn’t believe he would make it through alive. The Hot 97 interview segment includes video footage obtained by THE CITY through a public disclosure request filed with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office. The boys revealed that they had spent months in a state of fear in their own neighborhood after being confronted by Forrester. They spoke, too, about what it was like to hear Mayor Eric Adams give his support to Maddrey after THE CITY’s reporting. “It feels like we’re by ourselves,” 15-year-old Kyi-el said. “It feels like nobody believes us.” Read more here. Some other items of note: Opening day at Citi Field: Crowds of blue and orange, games of cornhole, hot dogs grilled on fenders and coolers full of beer. On Friday, the tailgating tradition continued in the parking lot of the stadium for the 2023 season — and fans wondered how long it would continue. With Mets owner Steve Cohen spending big to create a casino where fans now party, the days of tailgating at the Queens arena may be numbered. A City Council hearing on a wage standard for app-based delivery workers got heated, with workers and their advocates testifying that corporate scare tactics were pushing them into accepting less than they’re entitled to. Here’s what they said. A judge has approved a deal with the MTA to make subways 95% accessible to people with disabilities by 2055. Despite the far-off due date, it’s a huge milestone for advocates pushing for improvements to the transit system. Primary Day is June 27 and we want to make our 2023 elections reporting better with your help. What are your questions about voting, your ballot or local campaigns? Text “Election” to THE CITY’s team at (718) 215-9011 to get answers, or email us at ask@thecity.nyc with “Election” in the subject line. New Yorkers have until May 31 to submit the names of loved ones to MISSING THEM, THE CITY’s COVID-19 memorial project: Send a note to memorial@thecity.nyc. May 31 is also the last day to see the MISSING THEM photo exhibit in The Bronx and Queens. See how New York City is doing with our newsroom’s economic recovery tracker.
