Dear Reader,
Investigative reporting has been a cornerstone of our newsroom since THE CITY launched four years ago in April 2019.
It started with an in-depth look at how a laborer lost his life due to unsafe working conditions at a construction site. Since then, we’ve published over a hundred articles investigating City Hall, Rikers Island, the impact of climate change on New York neighborhoods, affordable housing and more.
Thanks to the generous support of individuals who, like you, care deeply about New York City, we’ve expanded our newsroom greatly since we first hit publish. Most recently, we hired four journalists and an investigations editor to deepen our newsroom’s investigative capacity to hold those in power accountable.
And we’re already seeing results: - We obtained striking video that showed how the NYPD’s top uniformed officer personally intervened to void charges against an ex-cop accused of menacing three Brownsville kids with a gun. Within weeks of our report, Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey was found to have abused his authority by a civilian review board - an extremely rare outcome for such a senior figure.
- We uncovered how a band of speculators are seizing deeds from Black-owned Brooklyn brownstones.
- And found that a reviled landlord won a multimillion-dollar contract after hiring Mayor Adams’ ex-chief of staff.
Today, we’re kicking off our annual spring fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $50,000. We need your support today to power our team’s work and be a vigilant watchdog for New York City.
THE CITY has only been able to produce this work because everyday New Yorkers like you have stepped up and donated. |
