WORLD WORLDWIDE FRANCE News Journal Update - (en) France, UCL AL #337 - Antipatriarchy, Understanding gender transitions: Social transition, the deep dive (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr) [machine translation]

After exploring the most "palpable" elements of gender transitions : access to

care, treatment, administrative procedure, here is the fourth and final articlein the series. It concerns a dreaded step, and often fraught with consequences :coming out. ---- The desire to come out and the fear of reactions when coming outis an experience shared by all LGBT people. For trans people, this is also ofparticular importance: it is on this occasion that we ask our family, friends orcolleagues to consider us the gender that is ours. This is often the beginning ofthe transition... if only from their point of view. ---- Indeed, many transpeople delay this step as much as possible, and often begin other transitionprocesses in secret before making their announcement to some of their socialcircles. Rightly so: in France, only 47% of people declare that they wouldwelcome the trans coming out of a member of their family [1].The rejection of a coming-out can be devastating: loss of friends and thereforesocial isolation, moral violence, physical violence, harassment (especially atschool). This is one of the major reasons for the disproportionate rates ofdepression and suicide among trans people. People who are minors (or dependent ontheir parents for other reasons) are very often denied access to care, when theyare not simply victims of conversion therapy : a set of methods, ranging frommanipulation to rape and torture, in an attempt to " force " someone to betransgender. Practices actively encouraged by so-called " parents' groups "organizing online, although they have been explicitly illegal since last summer.More complicated than a simple adSocial transition is not just about coming out. It's a whole process, withmultiple coming-outs, but which also involves a change in the way you presentyourself. Appearance, way of speaking, way of walking, posture, behavior...Gender is perceived by society in the most subtle details. It is often socialtransition alone, even without a medical procedure, that allows you to be seen ofyour chosen gender in the public space (what is called passing). When this transition is incomplete or insufficient, or when our presentation ofgender does not fall neatly into the "man" or "woman" boxes, we end up beingvisibly trans in the public space, which runs the risk of aggression andharassment. The question of public toilets is a striking example of this: underthe pretext of the alleged dangerousness of trans people, they are forced to usethe toilets of their sex assigned at birth... where they are most likely to beattacked.Chloe (UCL Grenoble)To validate[1] YouGov online survey, June 2021, sample of 1028 people.https://www.unioncommunistelibertaire.org/?Comprendre-les-transitions-de-genre-Transition-sociale-le-grand-plongeon_________________________________________A - I N F O S  N E W S  S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
