Platform workers. The new frontiers of exploitation ---- "Before the internet, it
wouldn't have been easy to find someone and sit them down for ten minutes to workfor you, then fire them after those ten minutes. But with technology you can findit, pay a pittance for it and then get rid of it when you no longer need it" thissentence (attributed to the American entrepreneur Lukas Biewald) is not a jokebut perfectly records one of the new frontiers of exploitation, the elusive one -of "platform workers". ---- The paraphernalia of master exploitation is enrichedevery day with new tools, without disposing of any of those already in use. Thus, alongside archaic and "illegal" models such as work in semi-slave conditions inthe tomato fields, with "wages" of a few euros a day and extensive use ofimmigrant child labour, there coexist highly legal forms of exploitation such asthe use of term, false VAT numbers, subcontracting at maximum discounts, vouchers(which are now making a big comeback). Alongside these, the number of peopleworking for a digital platform is growing more and more. But who are the "platform workers"? This category includes all those people who,in the illusory world of the "sharing economy" (which would mean "sharingeconomy", but it is only raw exploitation) offer their work services using adigital platform. To understand more, we spoke to Mauro De Agostini who dedicated an article tothese issues published in the latest issue of Umanità Nova.First of May. A May 1st of war and struggleAnother May 1st of war, deaths and destruction on our doorstep, a war that seesus involved, with the sending of heavy weapons, ammunition and anything elseneeded to enrich the slaughter industry and prolong its profits . Another May Daywithout an international movement of men and women workers being able tointervene forcefully by sabotaging the ongoing wars in all parts of the worldwhere armed conflicts continue to sow mourning. Blocking the shipment of arms, halting rearmament policies, halting the race for ever more devastatinginstruments of death, fighting for the reconversion of the factories of massacre, are still important objectives on which we need to multiply our energies. But it is also another May Day in which there is a recovery, albeit in adefensive key, of significant initiatives in the world of work. The countless strikes that have swept through Europe in recent months are animportant signal. The new digital technologies of automation, the emergence of artificialintelligence represent a test that cannot be escaped. It is now clear that thetechnological change implemented over the last few decades, instead of bringingabout improvements in working conditions (such as the reduction of working hours)has brought with it an overall impoverishment of work (increase inunderemployment, precariousness and mobility ) which has had clear repercussionsin the social field. We talked about it with Massimo Varengo of the Libertarian University of MilanFirst of May.
