Resist the repression! ---- In the face of global crises, let's build food
sovereignty to ensure a future for humanity! ---- The International Day ofPeasant Struggles is commemorated by La Via Campesina every year on April 17 toremember the 1996 Eldorado do Carajás massacre, where the state machine, alliedwith agribusiness interests, killed 19 peasants who defended the their right tothe land. On this day, we also highlight and denounce the continuedcriminalisation, oppression and repression of peasant, labour, migrant andindigenous communities around the world. Our lives are at risk and so is the future of humanity. In recent months alone, social movements in Brazil, Palestine, Paraguay,Colombia, Mali, Ecuador, France, Spain, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, SouthKorea, Kenya, Canada, Haiti, Guatemala and Peru have denounced the seriousviolations of the rights of peasant and rural communities.Even hunger is violence. The pandemic and ongoing conflicts have only accentuatedhunger. All these so-called crises are an indictment of the dominant model ofcapitalism that exists today. Our territories, whose climate and biodiversity arecontinually destroyed as capitalist interests impose new and increasinglydangerous technologies without any public debate, consultation or participation, threaten every way of life around the world. Political and social instability iswidespread due to systematic murders, massacres, enforced disappearances, highrates of femicide, arbitrary imprisonment and detention, intimidation, harassmentand threats, persecution of defenders of territories, forced migration and warsagainst ordinary people. This April 17, more than ever, we reaffirm that our struggle is part of thedefense of human rights and life, as stated in the United Nations Declaration onthe Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP). Whilecapital advances on territories until recently considered "marginal", peasants, indigenous peoples and other rural inhabitants represent the main frontier ofresistance against the hydro-agro-extractivism of transnational megacorporations. The Via Campesina is an expression of this collective action and resistance. Thisyear, as our global movement celebrates its 30th anniversary, we are stepping upthe pressure to build an alternative systemic model that delivers social justice. This April 17 is, therefore, a moment to reaffirm our concrete proposals. We willbuild a better society in which our different societies realize their foodsovereignty through the practice of peasant agroecology. We will continue todefend our rights using UNDROP and other international tools. We will buildbetter societies with justice. Our local food production, self-determination withdignity, peace, popular peasant feminism and popular sovereignty are onlypossible with these tools. There is no future without food sovereignty! Our Call for the 8th International Conference. In November of this year, La Via Campesina will convene its VIII InternationalConference in Nicaragua. In this International Conference, we will bring togetherthe diverse proposals emerging from our 182 member organizations in 81 countries. We will learn from a diverse set of experiences that our farming and indigenouscommunities have already put into practice. We will exchange and build acollective vision for the future based on these existing alternatives that arebeing practiced in our communities. And as we gather our proposals for this important event, our call to unite andbuild a new society is well expressed in the slogan of the 8th Conference: "Inthe face of global crises, let's build food sovereignty to secure a future forhumanity!"The precondition for such a future is an immediate and unconditional end to theongoing criminalization and persecution of peasant movements and their leaders.April is our time to collectively denounce this persecution, to stand unitedagainst the forces that oppress us.This call is for all members of La Via Campesina to come together this April andbe seen and heard.
