Dear New Yorkers,

Just days after Mayor Eric Adams decided to house asylum-seekers in elementary school gyms in Brooklyn, his administration bused 75 people out of a Coney Island public school and into a Manhattan building.

The news, first reported by THE CITY, came after a day of tense protests outside schools in the borough on Tuesday.

By late morning Wednesday, buses were lined up outside P.S. 188 in Coney Island to transport migrants to another location, according to eyewitnesses on site.

That turned out to be the office space once used by Touro College across from Moynihan Station in midtown — a space that, like the gyms, doesn’t have showers.

Still, the space felt like an upgrade to migrants like 29-year-old Venezuelan Juan Carlos, who said sharing a room with ten people gave him more privacy than he’d had at shelters in Denver and El Paso.

“Where we are is better than where we came from. You always have to have a little patience,” he said in Spanish.

Some other items of note:

  • A Brooklyn couple is suing the NYPD after a “no-knock” raid that yielded no charges against them. After police officers burst unannounced into the couple’s Brownsville home, the couple was detained for 20 hours in their pajamas, they said. Now, their lawsuit alleges that their rights were violated and they were humiliated during the raid and subsequent arrest.

  • Mets owner Steve Cohen is playing hardball over sharing parking lots with a future soccer stadium — apparently in hopes of getting city clearance to build a casino near Citi Field.

  • Join THE CITY’s COVID-19 memorial project, MISSING THEM, this Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. for the closing reception of our ongoing exhibition with Photoville, honoring New Yorkers who are no longer with us. The free event at the Bronx Documentary Center's Annex will include a live theatrical performance by the Working Theater. RSVP here.

  • Tonight, THE CITY’s Rachel Holliday Smith will be speaking at “Luck & Lotto,” a free panel at BRIC House Ballroom in Brooklyn, about the scarcity of low-income and affordable housing in New York City. RSVP here.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Thursday's Weather Rating: 9/10. Sunny skies remain in control with high temperatures in the lower 60s. It’s still a bit breezy and there’s a slight chill in the air, but otherwise there is literally nothing to complain about today. The vibes are close to perfect out there!

THE KICKER: Pale Male, the city’s famous red-tailed hawk, died on Tuesday night according to a wildlife rehabilitator. (Or did he? Since he was never banded, we’ll never know for sure.) Pale Male nested for three decades above Fifth Avenue — except for a brief incident in which he and his family were temporarily evicted in the early aughts. He attracted generations of fans from around the world.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Thursday.

Love,
THE CITY
