Dear Reader,

At THE CITY, we strive to be a dynamic resource for New Yorkers through free-to-read, high-quality local journalism, and nothing is more exemplary of this mission than our housing reporting.

When we exclusively reported that over 60,000 rent-stabilized apartments were left vacant in 2021 amidst a worsening housing shortage, that article became one of our most read stories of the past year and ignited a citywide conversation about why urgently needed homes were being kept off the market. In addition to scoops, we produce solutions-based reporting, like our story on a pilot program in some of NYCHA’s Bronx apartments that showed a vast improvement in air quality after induction stovetops were installed.

I'll Donate & Double My Impact!

We also publish helpful explanatory stories –– including this one that breaks down how to request your rent history and find out if your apartment is rent-stabilized –– that make navigating New York City easier for all residents.

And we don’t stop there: our data team is always juggling several projects that allows our readers to visualize and better understand crucial issues, like our map that lets users see if their building’s landlord has been registering less rent-stabilized units than in previous years.

Working to publish this breadth of local journalism requires time and resources.

Donate Today!

But our team of two dozen journalists and editors are wholly committed to our mission of delivering innovative local news for all New Yorkers. So if you value this work, please donate now to power our newsroom’s NYC-focused local reporting.

And remember, every dollar donated from now through Friday, up to $20,000, will be doubled thanks to a generous matching gift from a supporter.

Sincerely,

Richard Kim
Editor-in-Chief
