We reported on the plight of Kareem Mayo, who was expected to stay behind bars on Rikers Island for weeks even after a Brooklyn judge tossed out his murder case. After our story was published, officials began working behind the scenes and Mayo was freed days later.
We published an extensive investigation into the child mental health care system, which revealed a significant drop in beds at state psychiatric hospitals and reported out its impact on families. Shortly after our stories appeared, Attorney General Letitia James held two hearings on the issue and cited our reporting, and Gov. Kathy Hochul later highlighted the restoration of some mental health beds in her state budget.
