After a succession of winter and then spring demonstrations, was May 1 going to
be the burial of the movement against pension reform? ---- At first sight, no ifwe only rely on the large number of demonstrators (even if there were moremassive days) and the dynamism of certain processions, even the number ofprocessions wild. No, if we consider that it was at this May Day demonstrationthat we saw the processions of young people, students and high school students, the most extensive and the long duration of these young and "wild" processions .---- On the other hand, if we consider that the union leaderships did not at allappreciate being so overwhelmed, that the firmness opposed by the governmentcould only demonstrate their impotence and that they therefore chose to postponethe next demonstration to a deadline of 5 weeks, it was not a question of aburial but of a last turn for the honor before returning to discuss with aninflexible government. And on the other hand, concerning the young people, it wasalso for them a last round before revisions and exams...What strategy could have led to a different result? Perhaps a real desire tobuild an interprofessional general strike. This is not at all in the culture ofmost confederations. So only the employees of a few sectors (railway workers, energy) tried to play the game; but in isolation, it was a needless sacrifice(fortunately limited by well-filled strike coffers). Finally, the movement reliedheavily on employees with more or less secure employment and retirees. The mostprecarious employees and job seekers, always very difficult to convince of thepossibility of fighting (which can be understood) were not very present in thedemonstrations. The government has effectively defused what could have benefitedthe struggle by granting some benefits to road transport employees.A week before the demonstration of June 6, it does not seem too difficult topredict a mobilization still down compared to May 1, while remaining quitesignificant. A jump would be amazing. So what can replace these big demonstrations? The "Casserolades" are very nicebut they remain symbolic actions carried out by a minority of grassrootsactivists, often not enlisted, reminding those in power that they are in theminority in public opinion. That's not enough to make it a social movement. In terms of corporate struggles, there is still hope, the balance sheet of thefight at Heineken and the Insubordination wage section suggest some possibilitiesof partial victories. It is important, even if it does not radically change oursociety. Any struggle leading to an achievement, however small, gives hope forsubsequent struggles. However, current struggles should not be confined to wages and material livingconditions. There are very important issues in terms of the management of commonresources on this planet, the preservation of the climate, of naturalenvironments. These points were extensively discussed in CA N°330. Of course, capitalism always seeks to promote lucrative economic activities regardless ofthe destruction they bring.Fortunately, opposition is being heard, whether on water management, roadinfrastructure, the establishment of commercial areas... Demonstrations are moreand more numerous on these lands and the stigmatization of "ecoterrorists" by thedisaster of Interior no longer have an effect. Despite the violence of thewarlike repression more than the police in Sainte-Soline, many people went to themeetings of the territorial defense struggles. Because of the threat ofdissolution of the Uprisings of the earth by Darmanin, this movement isreinforced and develops local establishments. Can the future of struggles be found there? No doubt in part, but what remainsimportant is to link the movements: the rural and the urban, the social and theecological, the defense of the conquered and the desire to obtain new ones, people with the French nationality and migrants. All this must also be done bydeveloping respect for gender differences, minorities, people from the suburbs, immigrants, etc. Absolutely not to create specific categories but on the contraryto move towards equality for all. In particular, starting this summer, we willhave to strengthen solidarity with migrants and denounce the collusion betweenthe right-wingers in power and those who push even more towards segregation andstate racism.A few more words on repression. We see today more than ever how much thegovernment of Macron and Borne, at the service of capitalism on the ideologicaland practical level, is ready to do anything to defend the interests that helpedhim get to this position. They are ready for anything in the fight against socialand environmental movements, they are ready for anything in the fight againstmigrants. For this they rely on a police force, a large part of which supportsthe RN and Reconquête. The unbridled violence they allow themselves confirms thatthe difference is very small between Macronie, the LRs, the RN.It is necessary now to organize against state repression, to fight all forms ofpolice surveillance, and above all to show our allies of circumstances in thesocial movements that all victims of repression have the same rights to oursolidarity, whether they were peaceful protesters, whether they went to theconfrontation with the cops or whether they sabotaged equipment.Fighting, responding to social regression and state repression, is vital!Limoges, May 29, 2023http://oclibertaire.lautre.net/spip.php?article3805_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
