The idea of devoting an article to the Couriau affair, of which we are publishing
the second part this month, came about following the publication of the opinionpiece by Murielle Guilbert, joint general delegate of Solidaires: "I no longerwant to be the only woman in the photo. Since then, on March 31, 2023, on theoccasion of its 53rd congress, Sophie Binet was elected Secretary General of theCGT, a first since the creation of the union in 1895. Things are thereforeprogressing... but slowly ! ---- The history of women's unionization is that of along fight, within our own class, against the dominant representations of apatriarchal system on which capitalism relies to divide and further exploit theproletarians .The Couriau affair is only one episode. This story also illustrates the fact thatthe "class struggle" focus alone often put forward by some in our camp is notenough to emancipate workers. Other oppressions co-exist, mutually reinforce eachother and form a system. The fights against these oppressions are not mutuallyexclusive and can be articulated, this was in particular the subject of thebrochure that we published in March 2022: "When women stand up, the peopleadvance" on the issues of unionization of feminized sectors [1].Published by Liberation on March 8, 2023: "I no longer want to be the only womanin the photo![2], this column by Murielle Guilbert did not evade any of thepitfalls experienced by union activists, including within Solidaire.The presentation made by Libé from this forum summed up the issues well: "How isit that the head of the trade union organizations remains very largely male? Ifthe unionization of women is progressing, mentalities and statutory rules muststill evolve, believes Murielle Guilbert, co-delegate of Solidaires".In this forum, Murielle Guilbert recalls that "sexist resistance to the issue ofpower (all relative) represented by a so-called "leadership" function or in anycase of representation" are at work "at all levels in unions, as well as insociety as a whole". It makes no secret of the existence "including in tradeunions" of this insidious "everyday sexism" which persists and which, lessvisible than gender-based and sexual violence (SGBV) - which is still too oftenignored and understated -, still discourages and pushes too many activists toleave. She recognizes that there are "reflections to be had on the adoption ofthe joint rules to be imposed (co-delegation, or alternate representation ofwomen and men), at all levels".In conclusion of this forum, she urged women not to give up and recalled that forthe allies of these activists this "also requires a journey of militant andpersonal 'deconstruction' with regard to the patriarchal system to which theyhave been so fed" . Hey, the guys are getting into it too, it's not just thegirls that it concerns![ndr].Aware that only a diversified representation at all levels will be the "guaranteeof a trade unionism in tune with the world of work in its diversity and itsreality", that "which makes you want to go to the streets, and to mobilize" .This means that beyond the question of the representation of women, those ofgender minorities, racialized people, non-graduates are also essential.
