Since the mid-1990s, a struggle has been waged on both sides of the Alps by
opponents of the project for a high-speed line between Lyon and Turin. The NoTAV, which appeared in the Val de Susa, waged an original struggle rich inlessons that is still alive and topical. A story of a struggle that does notweaken. ---- Last September on the heights of Modane, in Villarodin-Bourget(Savoie), more than 200 people gathered against the TGV Lyon-Turin line project. The demonstrators denounced in particular the drying up of water resources in theMaurienne, a consequence of the construction of the Lyon-Turin high-speed line, aproject supported on both sides of the Alps by elected officials from the mainpolitical parties, entrepreneurs... and the Mafia[1], but fiercely opposed bylocal populations.Yet another episode in a struggle that began in the mid-1990s, marked by the NoTAV movement, which was a very active concrete political laboratory and hascontinued to renew itself ever since.Above all local mobilizationIn September 2014, comrades from the FdCA (Federazione dei Comunisti Anarchici)told us about the origin of the No TAV [2]. "The No TAV movement[TAV being theacronym in Italian for Treno ad Alta Velocità, High Speed Train]was born in the1990s from popular assemblies called by spontaneous committees of the inhabitantsof Val di Susa[50 kilometers east of west of Turin]against the project to buildthe high-speed line between Turin and Lyon. The opposition arises from the refusal to sacrifice an entire valley, with itseconomy, its culture and its inhabitants, to a project whose strategicuselessness for effective economic development, as well as the environmental andhealth risks it entails, is understood. We remember the devastating impacts that the TGV brought for example in theApennines with the construction of the Florence-Bologna line - disfiguration ofthe territory, depletion of perennial resources and mafia infiltration process aswell as presence in the mountains to be crossed of ores containing uranium andasbestos, with the consequent risk of uncontrolled propagation of fibers andradiation.»The struggle of the No TAV is first of all a struggle built and carried outlocally in a valley where the collective memory is still nourished by theaccounts of the anti-fascist resistance of the partisans (all the ANPI -Associazione Nazionale Partigiani sections, of the valley and even borderingareas are No TAV).It was in 1995 that the first major demonstrations took place and that the fightbecame popular outside Val di Susa. The repression is not long in coming andopponents will be victims of the arbitrariness of the Italian state and its classjustice. As often the anarcho-autonomous movement is blamed: Edoardo Massari andSoledad Rosas (alias Sun) will die, he is found hanged in his cell, hiscompanion, on probation, will commit suicide.A ZAD before its timeWith the approach of the Turin Games to be held in 2006, the fight intensified, and the years 2003-2005 saw successive occupations, demonstrations and finallythe temporary abandonment of the works. Regularly since, 2011-2012, 2018, thestruggles resume to the rhythm of the projects of the promoters. On the French side, even if the fight is less intense, the opponents of the TGVLyon-Turin are and remain mobilized. On June 17 and 18, the No TAV and the EarthUprisings are organizing a weekend of mobilization. The UCL groups from Savoie,Haute-Savoie and Isère will be present and mobilized against the appetites of thecapitalists.David (UCL Savoie)To validate[1]"Among the No TAVs in Italy: 20 years of fighting against the absurdLyon-Turin project", Reporterre.net, September 21, 2015[2]"No Tav: The Val di Susa, a laboratory for many struggles", Alternativelibertarian, n° 242, September 2014.https://www.unioncommunistelibertaire.org/?Luttes-No-TAV-Un-laboratoire-toujours-d-actualite_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
