On 20th of May the Iraqi State surrounded the Kurdish refugee camp in Mahmur.
Tanks, the army and police blocked all entrances and exits in order to build awall of barbed wire to further isolate the camp. Since the first day of theencirclement, the people of Mahmur camp have been showing resistance by puttingtheir bodies in front of the tanks, throwing stones at the gunners, calling forsolidarity. ---- 12,000 people live in the Mahmur camp. The camp was built in theMahmur area in 1998 and hosts refugees who were forced to leave their villagesafter the Turkish state, in 1994, attacked and burned down more than 4000villages in the Turkish-occupated area of Kurdistan. The people there have beenin exile for almost 30 years. When the Islamic State's fascists invaded the Iraqiregion, it was the Mahmur recruits who formed militias under the banner of theKurdish Freedom Movement and resisted the fascism of the IS in 2014, at a timewhen the Iraqi regime and Barzani's peshmerga were running to save their hides.Officially, Mahmur is under the protection of the UN High Commission forRefugees, but the UN left the camp during the 2014 Islamic State attacks andnever returned.The strategy followed by the fascist states of Turkey and Iraq is clear. Theattack on the autonomous area of the Mahmur camp is an attemp to cut the campfrom its connection with the ongoing revolutionary struggle in Rojava and to pavethe way for a new wave of attack on the liberated area of North-East Syria. Thecity of Shengal (the Kurdish name for Sinjar) and the Mahmur camp are crucialsectors for the extension of the Rojava revolution outside of the Syrianterritory. In 2021, the Turkish's bombardments on Shengal was aimed at breakingthe kurdish resistance, but the State was unable to do so. Now, with the help ofthe Iraqi-Barzani forces, Turkey again attack the kurdish and theirself-organized structure, this time in the Mahmur camp. The existance of the campposes a treath on the fascists states because they know that, if they were toattack our revolution in Rojava, there would be strong rebellions from thekurdish living in the camp. For this reason, they are making the attempt toisolate the camp and silence the resistance by bulding military infrastrucutrearound it.The blockade of the Mahmur camp by the Iraqi state did not come as a bolt fromthe blue. It is a continuation of the embargo imposed by the Barzani regime sinceJuly 2019. It is the result of the 9 October agreement between Turkey, Iraq andBarzani on the subjugation and genocide of the Yezidi Kurds. The pact, which hascome to be known as the Sinjar pact, aims to disarm all forces except the Iraqiarmy. That is, the disarmament of the forces that put up a strong resistanceagainst the Islamic State in 2014. It is a continuation of the aerial bombardmentof the autonomous regions of Sengal and Mahmur by the Turkish state with theagreement and assistance of the Iraqi state and the nationalist KDP government ofBarzani.In reality, all three actors are servants of imperialism - the NATO allies - andtheir actions are fully aligned with the war waged by NATO against the forces ofrevolution in the Middle East. At the same time, the KDP government of Barzanihas once again closed the floating bridge linking Rojava with the Iraqi part ofthe Kurdish territory.
